How cold is too cold?
Is it possible for it to be too cold for a walk? I took Samwise, my 5 1/2 month old lab, out for a walk today in the rain. It was about 30 degrees (F). He seemed to be okay until it started to hail. He was trying to run back to the car. I'm thinking that he just didn't like the hail. I'm posting this question as winter nears and I'm picturing a 6 month old lab in the house with no way to release his energy.

well I think he was affraid of the hail, I mean did you like being hailed on?
yah lol I think to cold is like -5 degrees F or anyhting below freezing. Labs have thick coats they hunt pheasant and other fowel so I take back what I said it can't get to cold unless you know you go outside with all the coats in the world on and are still cold then its too colod.... lol ![]() |

If you are cold, the puppy is cold. He is still so young that much of his undercoat might not have come in. I would suggest getting him a coat for the winter (for the really cold days). Watch for shivering, picking up his feet, and whimpering... those will be signs of him getting cold.

For my silly little pampered pugs, if it's below 32, I put on their sweaters under their harnesses. They don't really mind the cold on walks, they are so happy to be walking, they don't seem to stop and think about the cold. However, when it comes to doing their business in the yard at night when its cold (20 degrees and below), I have to practically push them out the door, and stand out there with them, or they won't leave the porch. They'd rather hold their bladders til they popped.

I agree that he was probably scared of the hail....when it hits human skin, it can sting and be pretty scary, why wouldn't it be that way for dogs and other animals? I have a Lab, and gosh does she love the snow
. Just today she was the first dog to go outside when it was falling.... Anyways, Labs have water-proof coats, and undercoats. If your puppy is showing any signs of coldness, get him a dog coat and (if you need to) doggie booties. |

Hi,
Ummm if 30 degrees above is too cold to walk a dog or even -5 maybe I should think about litter box training Butters because it will get much colder then those two temperatures before winter is over. Oh yeah I live in Alaska LOL.Anyways all kidding aside, Butters will actually sit down IN The Snow when she is ready to go back inside when her paws are getting too cold. I am going to be getting her a set of booties this week. Otherwise if I have her in the yard and she is running around it doesn't seem to bother her in fact she absolutely loves to go tearing around the yard whether there is another dog out there with her or not!! I don't think 30 degrees is too cold for a Lab or most dogs for that matter. I think the hail isn't much fun though. I take my dogs for walks unless it gets to about 10 degrees. I live in north Idaho and we get some chilly weather. I use a coat for my Chi's if it gets below about 15-17 degrees, but my Lab is fine. As long as they're exercising, that seems to keep them warm.

I think they just have to get acclimated to the weather. When Bailey was younger she would shiver and cry when it was 65 degrees! This winter she doesn't seem to care when in't 28 degrees outside. She is just used to it now. She isn't even bothered by the rain anymore. Before she wouldn't step one foot out the door if it was raining...now she just plows out the door and tries to make me play ball when it's 40 degrees and pouring down buckets! Grrrrrrr

DON"T LITTER TRAIN
Dont litter train your dog if it isn't going to be the permanet way they relive them selves.
ONe day I went to look at a dog and it was litter trained. It would go outside but was confused by it, this dog was 2 inhalf, the man reccently moved into his house adn there were pee stains all over. the dog was confused inside or out. adn there house was just built. I am not against litter traing but not for big dogs! |

Hi,
I was kidding when I asked if I should litter box train Butters. My point was that since I live in Alaska it gets waaaay colder then 30 above or even 5 below so I have no choice but to walk her in those types of temperatures. It was -8 degrees this morning and she was fine, she was bouncing around and playing in the snow.I am in the process of kennel training her and so far she doesn't seem to mind the kennel. A friend of mine loaned me one of the large airline style kennels. I put Butters favorite blankie in the bottom and she has a few of her toys in there. She hasn't fussed when I have closed the door while she has been in there. While I am home I leave the door open so she can go in there if she wants and come back out if she wants. I have it set up in the livingroom right next to my recliner so that helps and it works great as an end table LOL. Jaye |

Last winter for about 5 days or so, we had temperatures of 30 below zero. We skipped the walks but the dogs still had to go out to do their bathroom duties. I didn't put coats on the short haired dogs when they had to go out. They just hurried up and came back in. LOL. They were fine.
