Worried about my puppy, please advise
Hello everyone,
This is my first post and I indeed am a dog lover. I have a little bundle of joy shitzhu who I love. I just took him last week for his second set of shots and he has not been the same since. He has not been eating much or at all. His appetite has decreased to little to null. He has been more tired then usual although he still plays. I am worried about him. I will be taking him to the Vet tommorow as a precaution. Is this normal behavior after immunizations? Perhaps sideffects? Please advise, -A concerned pet lover, Thanks in advance |

Thanks for the prompt reply. He still loves to eat his doggie treats its just his regular food that he is no longer interested in. He used to devour his plate in a minute now it stays all day. |

vaccinosis can present itself in many many ways. In my breed of choice, the Weimaraner, we have numerous immune issues that can be brought about by vaccines. Anywhere from going off food, to swelling of the joints causing permanent damage, even death.
Remember vaccines are injecting enough of a disease to cause the body to react and build antibodies... but not enough to cause the disease. Vaccinations have come a long ways in their sophistication, but, in essence we're still trying to convince the body that it is sick so that it reacts appropriately. Occasionally, the body does not react as we planned, and a puppy can get ill. |

Interesting.
Strange how the Vet didnt even mention anything to me about any possible sideeffects. He walked in, greeted me and pup, gave shots, said see you in 2 weeks and that was that. I have managed to reschedule and will be taking my pup this afternoon to the vet. Anything I should tell the Vet besides what I have observed? |

I think that vaccinations have become such a normal part of life for both animal and human that we sometimes forget to look at the side effects. For your vet it was probably such a basic routine thing that it didn't occur to him to explain it. I'm sure he'd be happy to sit down and talk to you about it if you ask.

Just came back from the Vet.
Diagnosis: Sick Puppy He charged me $200 for 3 shots, and 3 antiobiotics and the check up. Yikes! But my pup is worth it. his health comes first. Thanks everyone, Hope this will make my pup get better. I wonder why he got sick or how? |

It happens. Young puppies have such weak immune systems until they start to get older and they've recieved their routine shots, as well as being exposed to certain illnesses, but not necessarily catching them. That's why many people will tell you to keep your puppy limited to your yard, and limit contact with outside dogs until their shots are complete. They can catch just about anything. But even then, routine shots may not always protect them, and there's the slight chance a dog can catch something they are normall vaccinated for.
What were the three shots? |

Oh ok. Was just curious. Well, $200 is not bad for three shots, check up, and take home meds.
Glad you were able to get something to get him better! Hope he feels better soon! |

Thanks for your kindness. Good news already! He just ate a medium sized portion of food followed by a cookie treat. More than he has eaten in a couple of days. ![]() |

Just a little update.
He ate a little better today but still not the same. I have been keeping a close eye on him today and it seems his tummy has a temparature. He feels hot when I put him on my side. His body is giving off warmth. This worried me abit. Add to it I found out today that he has been eating berries from my backyard trees when he goes outside. These berries are not poisonous, I eat them all the time, but I do not know if they are bad for him. Could they be the reason for his lack of appetite? Perhaps he has been filling up on these tasty sweet things.? |

I have an 11 week old puppy who feels like a furnace!
Ask your vet, next time you're in, to show you how to take a dog's temp and what the normal temp is of a puppy and adult dog. Have you checked his poop? Make sure he's pooping and nothing strange is being excreted. Just a few ideas from someone who has dogs and children as well ![]() |

when trixie was a teeny pup I called her my little hot pack....I think their bellies are warm so that we always want to snuggle...
but as wolf said, you should learn those things, just to be safe. it's no fun, but a very good thing for all dog owners to know |
