Puppies first weekend
Well, we've just finished our first weekend, and it went rather well!
Some intersting things that came up and was hoping to get some feedback. She has a nice little habit of bitting anything/everything - which isn't suprising, but the stuff we bought doesn't phase her. It's not bitter apple, but another type of bitter agent. Also a mixture of water/vinegar doesn't phase her either. Both of these she just licks the object with out any care in the world!!! goofy puppy. Any ideas? perhaps if I bought the actual "bitter apple" brand name? Finally, she's only been eating around 3/4 cup of food a day at the most. Should I be concerned? she's 8weeks old. More Pictures Here -Mike |

First, you have the cutest puppy!!!!!! I looked at all of your pictures. He looks like he loves his big comfy bed! LOL
I have never used bitter apple for puppy chewing before but I did try it for my chinchilla gnawing on the corner of the walls and it didn't phase him either. He actually likes it! LOL I don't think any of that stuff works. Everytime your pup chews on something inappropriate just tell him "Ah-Ah" and hand him a chewy toy. When he chews on the toy give him praise and treats. Through out the day, anytime you see him chew on his toy give him treats and say "good chew". Try to catch him chewing good things at least ten times a day and praise him. When your pup starts biting and chewing your hands during playtime "YIPE" really high pitched like a hurt puppy and say "don't bite". Then hand him the chewy toy and praise him when he chews on it. If play biting gets really bad you can leave the room for one minute and ignore him. The biting and chewing may take a few months to stop but just keep at it. |

I actually found that Bitter Apple worked for my pup. Along with Barrett's suggestions, he now knows at 9 mos what's appropriate and what's not to chew on. It's great.
Good luck, ducker! She sure is a gorgeous little pup. ![]() |
