Puppy revelations

Things I've learned in the last four weeks:

1. An exhausted, frustrated puppy who does not want be in her crate can bark approximately 137 times in 60 seconds.
2. To get a barking puppy to bark even louder and faster, just tell her to be quiet or, better yet, sympathize with her.
3. Ignore the barking puppy, and she'll exhaust herself and fall asleep within 15 minutes (or 2,000 barks later, give or take).
4. A ten-week-old sibling of a barking puppy is smarter than most 40-something-year-old human beings because he already knows to ignore said barking puppy (and get some much-needed shut-eye in his own section of the crate).
5. Cats are not afraid of puppies. Cats rule.
6. Cats hate the taste of dog food.
7. Dogs love the taste of cat food.
8. There is no need to buy two of every dog toy when you have two puppies. Puppies prefer to chase, wrestle, steal and countersteal a single toy. Actually, the toy itself is irrelevant. The chase is everything.
9. A speeding puppy who isn't looking where s/he is going can move a piece of furniture, like a table or a chair or a couch (with someone sitting on it!) several feet.
10. Cats who are in the wrong place at the wrong time can run even faster than puppies.
11. Cats do not like running puppies or moving furniture and are not afraid to say so. Cats, in fact, are much more effective dog trainers than humans. One "correction" from an alpha cat like our Sylvia, for example, can last. . . Well, let's see. . . It's been two weeks now since the last racing-through-the-house incident. (Don't worry, she did not resort to claws. It was all attitude and voice!)

LOL So true! Very good list.

Let me add:

12. Puppies are master manipulaters. When scolded with a frim ah-ah for doing something wrong, they will stop what they are doing long enough to lay down, put their head on their paws, and look at you with sad puppy dog eyes for as long as you are watching. As soon as you turn your back, they are at it again.

13. Birds are very interesting intertainment items. Not only is staring at them while they hop around in their cage and whistle at you fun to do, but they scatter scrumptous food all over the floor. On this note, puppies make very good vacums.

14. Birds in themselves are the best deterrent for stopping a puppy from jumping on the cage. If they stick their nose up by the bars, watch out! Their nose is going to be chomped on by an inquisitive bird.

15. Against popular belief, puppies and children are NOT instant best friends, and for someone to bring home a puppy with three children under the age of 13 is truely insane.

Yes yes yes!
At one time, I had two parakeets. After about a week, my 130lb. dog started displaying "low dog" behavior whenever she entered the room where the bird cage was located. Our only guess was that she and the birds had a "conversation" is our absence.

Oh, I know! Chloe used to be very persistent about trying to get the bird. She jumped up on his cage once and stuck her nose at the bars trying to sniff Joey. Joey just walked over, cocked his head at her, and then started nibbling on her nose! Chloe got down very quickly and now will just watch the bird. LOL
