Talking here is what I wrote on my puppy's ID tag

I bought online a boomerang with a split ring large red heart ID tag.

It is a very large Red Heart (preferably), but other nice shapes would be considered also as long as it fits the following in that order:

FRONT:
DOB: 06/30/2007
Femida Nadezhda Niki
My friends call me "Niki"
Loved by: ........(my name)

BACK:
....... (phone number)
Please,
Call my Home
My owner is devasted
and so am I!

I will also get her another small one with my address and last name on it.

I'd be careful putting the dogs name on the tag, people can lure her away when they know her name.

I've heard of that too. I think putting very basic information on there is what would be ideal.

Phone numbers I would put would be one I could ALWAYS answer, and putting the vets number (if I had the room to).

Not to get off topic, but a cute tag one of the dogs at work had on the back said "I'VE ESCAPED! FREEDOM AT LAST!" LOL Kinda cute

I think the DOB, phone numbers, and address on one side, and on the back have something similar to yours. A phrase I would use on mine would be "If I'm out, I'm lost. Please help me get back home"

I think I've also heard that if you put "Needs medication" people are less inclined to take them? As in, steal them??

Love it!

Yup the "needs medication" is a good one. People are less inclined to take a dog that's going to mean vet bills (or if they think it means the dog could die).
The vets number is a good idea, especially if someone takes it and is then too embarrassed to return it to you personally.

Cass.

But people can also lure the dog to them if they're trying to catch the dog to help them. Jenny comes to her name for anyone, but she doesn't come to just any name. (Hate to be a spoil sport, but I think if a person has some food they wont have difficulty luring dogs away so they don't really even need a name. )

Mine have their first name, home and cell number. Having the dog microchipped is also important. A last name and address would not be advisable.

Question

wow! Thank you all! See that is why I post here! There are so many things that I do not know or I would not think. Every name tag I have seen from people I know has the dog's name, home address, phone, and owner's first & last name. She would definitely be microchipped also.

To be honest, I was going to put my last name and address in her name tag because I though I must do it for the dog's good, but I did not like the idea. I was afraid to have my home address displayed like that -- even if the dog does not get lost, how about if I would lose the tag with so much personal info on it. I did not like that idea either. The phone I put on the tag, is the only phone is always on, answered always, and have the same phone # for years.

For her name on the tag, I thought that if she was ever to get lost, it would be easier for a good samaritan to help her if he knew her name -- oops! too naive, I never thought of the other side -- but don't they have to have the dog first anyway to know her name as they would have to look at her ID tag to know that?

Also, how about if I only have her two names on it, and then write something like: If you do not know how my friends call me, I am not yours. Take me Home! I do not think it would be that easy to teach the dog another name fast and then pass it on as your dog. Also, I really liked that idea, and I am going to put on the vet's # and needs medication. Now, could be possible that the thief of the dog call at the vet and ask about the medication and the vet to say, she does not get any? That would defeat the purpose. How confidential is the medical info of my dog (healthy or unhealthy)?

I loved that line about the dog finding freedom -- too funny!

I have several tags but the minimum information is

Dog's Name
my phone number
mother's phone number
"Pls Take Me to any Banfield Hospital"

I include the Banfield line because
1. I'm on one of the Banfield plans and they are microchipped with both ISO and US chips. Even if their readers fail, they have all of my other contact information.
2. They may think they need medical treatment.

"I'VE ESCAPED! FREEDOM AT LAST!"

Made my day!

I do have to say one plus side I have found to the address...

Ike had gotten lose one day and had his tags on. However, the phone number on his tag was my cell number which I no longer had. But I never remembered to change it on his tag. So the people who found him looked our last name up and matched it up with the address in the phone book and were able to get ahold of us on our house phone. So from now on, we always put the house number on everyone's tag so we don't have an incident like that again.

Hehe, I'm glad everyone got a kick out of that expression on the tag

greekblue...If you make sure your vet knows you and your dog, I think they'd probably contact you before they gave out that info. Especially since they (the dognappers) don't have your name so couldn't confirm that they were you. You might like to inform your vet about what's on the tag in case anyone does call.

Oh and off topic. I was cruising youtube yesterday and found a few videos of a woman training a BRT. I thought of you and was so excited to see one in action (I've never seen one in real life ). I can PM you think links if you like. It's a beautiful dog (can't remember if it's male or female ).

Cass.

Hi Cass,
Please, send me that link, I would love to watch that.

BRTs are extremely smart dogs. On the website that they list all the breeds of working dogs -- mostly the ones they work as service animals, they describe each breed with a couple sentences; for the BRT, they say that they are the fifth most rare breed in the world and they considered to be the smartest dog in the whole world with a brain between monkeys and humans! Now, isn't that something!

I soooooooooo want my puppy NOWWWW!!!!! But she is with her mommy Sad for been away from her and Happy for her because it is important that she stays with her mommy right now.

Thank you!
