Hi all! I'm new to this forum. We got a puppy this past weekend from a breeder - an aussie. She's 10 weeks old now. Great dog. Quick learner. The only thing is the collar. We bought a small standard cloth type dog collar and tag about 3 days after we got her. She HATED it. Just frantic to get it off. So we took it off. The next day we tried it without the tag. Still hates it, still tries to get it off, but not as frantic. Then, when she can't get it off... she gets really pouty/mopey. Yup. Really. All bummed out and won't do anything but sulk. So after awhile we take the collar off but then she remains sulky for quite a bit. I don't want to tramautize her but at the same time I keep thinking she needs to get used to it. Is she too young? Should we wait awhile for the collar? It's not crucial she have one on now anyway. Thoughts? Suggestions? Please...

Put the collar on her, give her a super nummy treat and right before you take her in the car or on a walk. Make her know the collar means goodies and fun times. She will soon forget she's even wearing it.

I'd stop taking the collar off her at this stage - she really needs to get used to it otherwise you're never going to be able to take her anywhere.
My dog also HATED his collar with a passion so we just did as Calgal suggested - everytime he went to scratch or paw at it we got up and moved (simply because that took his focus from the collar back to us) then started a game with him, went for a walk or did a small bit of training so he had a chance to get a treat. You just need to find a way of turning it from a negative to a positive in her mind. |

Most puppies hate the collar at first, because they are not used to it.Keep it on her and she will eventually get used to it.

I agree. Keep the collar on. If you keep taking it off she'll just learn that if she puts up enough of a fuss it will be taken off (which is exactly what she wants). So she'll always fuss over it and never get use to it.
