8 Tips About How To Potty Training and Crate Training
One of the most frustrating challenge in housebreaking is Potty Training. Equip yourself with enough knowledge and skill and get ready to house breaking your puppy. Puppies especially the new one do not know what do you want or what do you expect from them. So it takes a lot of patience and persistency to make it done, remember to keep your temper because they are just like babies after all.
Here's the 8 tips you can use when house training your puppy : 1. Crate Training - Use a crate while potty training your puppy. He should be in there when the time you can't keep your eye on him. Do not worry about that because that is natural for them. Don't get worry when they cry, it's usual since it's the first time, let them get used to it and eventually they'll have fun with it. But do make the Crate an interesting place but not a punishment. Also, dogs are pack animals so it's helpful if you keep the crate in the bedroom where the rest of the "pack" is sleeping. Becareful of this steps because the puppy will cry at the beginning trying to be release. This may be tough but if the puppy is loose in the house then it will have the opportunity to potty anywhere. Keep the puppy in the crate until you think it understand where to potty. 2. Bring your puppy to the same spot - Whenever you saw your puppy are going outside, go along with it. The reason is you want to lead your puppy to the same area . This way the puppy will learn to smell and know what he suppose to do the next time. Only allow about 10 minutes for your puppy to potty, if it doesn't go, then bring it in and put it back in the crate. After 15 - 30 minutes, bring him back to outside again. Don't allow the puppy play until it potties because puppies are just little kids, they get all excited to go outside and forget why they went outside in the first place. 3. Tether to you while inside - When you are at home, and the puppy is not in the crate, consider using a long lead to tether the puppy to you. If the puppy is loose in the house it can gain the opportunity to sneak off and use the bathroom. The idea in house training is to avoid accidents, the tether works for that purpose. 4. Bring your puppy outside regularly - Try to take the puppy outside every hour. Why not take your puppy out for potty break while you're at home and avoid all the trouble; it'll learn more and quicker and it probably has to "go" anyway. 5. Keep a potty journal - Try to take notice how quickly the food move through your puppy body. This will help you measure when to get your little puppy outside and the following meals. 6. Praise for going outside and potty - When the puppy do it right, give it a reward, play with a favorite toy, gently touch his head and say "good boy" or whatever, just make sure you makes the puppy thinks, "I got so much fun for going outside potty!" 7. Bring the puppy outside immediately - When you're back home from work, and first thing in the morning. If the puppy gets excited it may have an accident, avoid the trouble by taking the puppy outside. 8. Teach the puppy to signal when it wants to go - Teach the puppy to bark or do specific action before going outside. This will help you to know when he has to "go". Once it gets to a point where it will alert you when it's time for a potty break, then you're successful. House training is only the beginning, there are far far way to go, so keep your patience and persistence. You can probably teach your puppy to sit, down, and stay, but socialization is good for the puppy. It needs to learn that it is okay for other people, strangers, to touch its paws and ears. |

#5 is also a good idea with a senior dog too. I found it very helpful in avoiding accidents to know when and how much he ate and drank, and when he "went" so i could predict his "next move" .... we think he had a small stroke and because of that he forgot he had to go outside to relieve himself!
