how long does it take for my pup to be potty trained?
Hey! i have my wonderful Puppy ShUg*s (8 Weeks old) on a regular training routine *Listed Below* how long do u think it will take until shes trained or atleast close to being trained? ThanX!
![]() ************************************************** ** 7:00 a.m. - Get puppy out of crate or sleeping area, and immediately take him outside to potty area on leash. 7:15 a.m. a Feed and offer water. 7:30 a.m. a Take puppy back out to potty area. Use a command, like eHurry up!e to encourage the dog to eliminate. A successful potty deserves great praise! Take for a walk or have a structured play session. 8:00 a.m. a Put puppy in crate or confined area for nap. Going to Work? If you have to go to work, like the rest of the world, you have two options. A very young puppy (8 to 12 weeks) should be crated for periods no longer than four hours during the day. You should come home during the day, to provide your puppy/dog with a break, otherwise you must have hire a service or have neighbor come in during the day to provide the proper care. As dogs mature, they can be left for longer periods of time, especially if they have earned freedom from the crate. Staying Home? If you donšt have to go to work, then continue the schedule 10:00 a.m. a Get puppy out of crate or sleeping area and immediately take him outside to potty area on leash. 10:15 a.m. a Walk the puppy and play for short period of time. 10:30 a.m. a Allow puppy to entertain itself with safe toys in a safe puppy-proof area. Noon - Feed puppy second meal 12:15 p.m. a Take puppy to potty area on leash. 12:30 p.m. a Have short play session and stimulate mentally with a short obedience session of sit and down. 1:00 p.m. a Put puppy back in crate for afternoon nap. 3:00 p.m. a Let puppy/dog out of crate or sleeping area and immediately take outside to potty area on leash. 4:00 p.m. a Allow puppy to socialize with kids coming home from school. (If you have no children coming home, find someone with children or other adults to expose the puppy/dog to members of the world! 5:00 p.m.a Feed last meal of the day and offer water. 5:15 p.m. a Take puppy to potty area on leash. 5:30 p.m. a Crate or confine puppy while the family prepares for and eats their dinner. 6:30 p.m. a Allow the puppy/dog to socialize with all members of the family, play quietly by itself, or go for a short walk. 8:00 p.m. a Offer a last drink of water for the night 10:00 p.m. a Take the puppy outside for one last epit stop.e Crate or confine puppy for the night only after you have seen it go poop and pee. It may seem stupid to follow this schedule to some but... ill do whatever it takes to do whats best for my pets... ![]() |

It all really depends on the dog, and how persistent the owner is with training. Dogs can be potty trained anywhere from 6 months to almost over 1 year of age. It's really hard to tell. Also depending on where you got your pup from, can play a roll in how well it's potty training goes.
And no its not stupid to follow that schedule. The pup NEEDS to learn a schedule, and that is the key to potty training. Just try very hard to be persistent in the process and stick to the same thing. Your pup is only 8 weeks, and it won't become potty trained in a short amount of time (unless you're one of the lucky few! ). Take in account for however many months old your pup is, and turn that into hours. So your pup is about 2 months, so 2 hours should be the max that your pup can hold its bladder. Good to see you have a schedule, just stick with it! ![]() |

Aw, that's wonderful you took the pups in and that you gave one a home. Kudos to you!
That must be the fluffiest little pup, have pictures? ![]() It'll be that way for a while... but if you're persistent enough, it will work! |

Congrats on the puppy! It's great that you are so devoted to training her. But, (and this just my own two cents) I think you've got the dog down as spending too much time in the crate. You can't dictate whether the dog will sleep for two hours. If she want's to sleep, let her go in the crate herself.
Good luck on the training! You really have to go by the dog for when it needs to eat; 5:00 may be too early, if you are going to put her to bed at ten. Consider this constructive criticism Oh, and one more thing; this is from pure experience. Take the dog out immediatley after feeding her. I thought that I'd wait ten minutes, too, but, my dogs would just go on the floor. Kinda hindered the training schedual, if you know what I mean. So, anyway, Good luck, with the baby! P.S. what's her name? |

thanks again lol her name is Shug*s (like sugar) she got her name from her dad who was ran over by a car...
i dont have any pics yet i have to get my camera developed... i know that the pup wont fall asleep and wake up at the exact times, im just guesstimating... lol i have also experienced the problem with if u feed her and wait for her she goes right away and not in the expected 10 or 15 minutes... lol shocked me... she is sooo fluffy and surprisingly FAT lol her mother did a wonderful job in feeding her.. im gonna be very persistant. i am a very huge animal lover i want to join peta! and for the rest of the pups in the litter we found very loveing homes nearby so they can visit eachother and play alot. |

Nobody can predict when your dog will be trained. Some in a week or two, some in a month or two, some not for 6 months, some never. It depends on you and the dog. Here's my thoughts about the schedule.
7:00 a.m. - Get puppy out of crate or sleeping area, and immediately take him outside to potty area on leash. If that is when you wake up. 7:15 a.m. a Feed and offer water. 7:30 a.m. a Take puppy back out to potty area. Use a command, like eHurry up!e to encourage the dog to eliminate. A successful potty deserves great praise! Take for a walk or have a structured play session. It deserves a treat reward in addition to praise. 8:00 a.m. a Put puppy in crate or confined area for nap. 4 hours is a very long time for a 8 week old puppy. They have very small bladders and not a lot of control over them yet. The rule of thumb for puppis is about an 1 hour per month of age. Staying Home? If you donšt have to go to work, then continue the schedule If you are staying home, there is no reason why the puppy needs to be confined. Instead, you should watch him and any sign that he has to go, interupt and take him outside so he doesn't go in the house. If you are home and can't watch him, then I agree you should confine him. 10:00 a.m. a Get puppy out of crate or sleeping area and immediately take him outside to potty area on leash. If you are home with your puppy, don't leave him alone for 2 hours alone. He needs to be with his family . 10:15 a.m. a Walk the puppy and play for short period of time. 10:30 a.m. a Allow puppy to entertain itself with safe toys in a safe puppy-proof area. Give the puppy a chance to go outside first before putting him in there. 3:00 p.m. a Let puppy/dog out of crate or sleeping area and immediately take outside to potty area on leash. What happens here between 3 and 4? 4:00 p.m. a Allow puppy to socialize with kids coming home from school. (If you have no children coming home, find someone with children or other adults to expose the puppy/dog to members of the world! Nothing wrong with that, but not really something you need to do everyday unless the kids live there. 5:00 p.m.a Feed last meal of the day and offer water. 5:15 p.m. a Take puppy to potty area on leash. 5:30 p.m. a Crate or confine puppy while the family prepares for and eats their dinner. Take the puppy outside to relieve itself. 6:30 p.m. a Allow the puppy/dog to socialize with all members of the family, play quietly by itself, or go for a short walk. 8:00 p.m. a Offer a last drink of water for the night You need to take the puppy out to relieve itself more than once in a two hour period after it has had a drink or you will have an accident in the house. Take him out after playtime anytime and anytime you notice him sniffing the floor like he has to go. 10:00 p.m. a Take the puppy outside for one last epit stop.e Crate or confine puppy for the night only after you have seen it go poop and pee. It may seem stupid to follow this schedule to some but... ill do whatever it takes to do whats best for my pets... [/quote]It's not a stupid schedule. It looks like you are trying to help the puppy learn to control his bladder longer. So, I assume there is nobody home with the puppy during the day. Since you are into schedules, it also helps if you keep track of what times your puppy really does pee and poop. Then if you need to adjust your feeding schedule so he doesn't go in his crate, you can. See article |

It all depends how persistant you are, a dog can take a good 6 months to a year to be fully house trained. As long as you go out with your puppy and tell your puppy to go pee, or hurry up (what ever word you use) your puppy will catch on quick. Also going to the same spot all the time helps, as your puppy gets older they will go to that same spot and makes it much easier for clean up as well. Alot of praise/treat for good behaviour, never punish your puppy if they have an accident that will only cause him to hide next time he has to go and he will be afraid to go in front of you.... I found it really easy to house train by keeping mine on a leash in the house so every where I went so did he.
Congrats on your puppy, you sound like your doing a good job ![]() |
