14 week spay?!

i met a dog today at a park (i was helping out with my sisters easter egg hunt) and it was a cute beagle mix, that the owner had adopted when it was a puppy from the biggest shelter around, The Haven. she said that the pupper was only 14 weeks old, and that her vet told her it was time to spay. so tomorrow that pupper is gonna get spayed, but the only thing is i thought that dogs couldnt get spayed until at least 6 months.. or is that just the males? i didnt say anything, becasue i dont know how young the females could be, and i didnt want to say something stupid. so is this gonna harm the poor pupper? i might be sitting her also in the near future! but that was all... so i geuss what i am trying to say in a nutshell is:

How old should a female be spayed at?

It seems that times have changed. 6 months used to be the minimum age but alot of vets do it sooner now. My vet spayed Natalie at 16wks of age....she's 4yrs old now and has'nt displayed any ill effects from the early spay.

I think it's common for shelters to do that. They need to get the dogs out of there and can't adopt them out unless they are neutered. I think it's too young, but I'm not a vet.

we sterilise them at 5- 6months old at my vet, its the best age to do so, alot of shelters have them done before they are given to a new home because of the problems with unwanted pups etc, so they so them before the new owners even get them so they know they are definetly getting done, Its a bigger anaesthetic risk to do them so young (its a bit like giving a new born baby an anaesthetic) but they do it anyway! I dont recommend it though!

Promise's puppies will be spayed and neutered at about 9 weeks old before they are adopted out to homes. The shelter I work for has been doing early spays and neuters for 3-3 1/2 years now and I couldn't be happier - before not everyone was following through on the contract and having their pets fixed. Best thing for shelters and rescues to do is to adopt the pet out already altered - I wish pet stores (hate them) would at the very least sell only altered pets.

Another topic that always has and always will I think be up for debate amongst owners and veterinarians alike. I prefer to wait until mine are at least five months old before doing a spay / neuter as I just don't feel that my breed of choice is ready mentally or physically to handle it.

Same here, for the pugs. The idea of having a pug, at 14 weeks, spayed/neutered, does not seem like the best thing in the world do to them. I want them more developed, before going through that. I can understand a shelter doing that, that get SO many in, that do not want puppies adopted out, intact. I totally understand that one. They have to do, what they have to do. It's necessary.

When we got Kayda, the shelter wanted to get her fixed that week. She was 7 weeks old. We talked to the lady and convinced her to let us wait until she was 4 months old. (That is as long as she would give us.) The catch was we had to pay for it ourselves and still pay the full adoption fee for her. We decided to wait though. I guess we just seemed trustworthy because another couple there was told the pup would have to be spuetered before they could take it no matter what. I can see the point though....these pups are usaully the result of an unwanted breeding and fixing them before hand is the only way to make sure they don't procreate.

Personally I prefer to allow the animal to reach full maturity before I would ever consider altering them.... They need all their body parts to grow and mature properly just like poeple.

In the long run I can see why they do it early to stop pet over population, but still way to early for me.

I'm not sure about females, but he(my male puppy) was only 4 months when he got neutered and the vet said that was fine.

The shelters around here don't spay/neuter until they're a few months old. Although the earlier they do it, the scarier it seems (for the dog's health) I think that, in the long run, it's better because some owners won't get around to it, they'll forget or they won't have the money for it when the time comes. If it prevents more dogs from being abandoned at shelters, I say better early than never.

our local shelter however . . .comes and retrieves the pets if you don't hold up your end of the deal and get them spayed when it is time. You get two chances to spay them. If you don't show up the second time, you lose them!

14 wks does seem to be a bit much but I understand the thought behind it.
