Parvo Puppy
Last Thursday someone left a puppy on my porch. When I got home from work he had diahrrea and was throwing up every where. I took him to the Emergency Vet and he has Parvo. He spent Thursday night at the Emergency Vet with an IV and Friday morning I took him to my regular vet. He spent all day Friday there and stayed Friday night for precautionary measure. He has been home since Saturday morning and doing well. He has eaten and kept everything down. However he has not gone poo since I brought him back. I do not know why, any suggestions?
He is in isolation from my other dogs right now. The Vet said wants his stool firmed up he should be good to go back with them. I am not sure and don't want to risk him getting sick again or one of my other dogs getting sick. Has anyone dealt with something like this and if so any suggestions on how long? |

For constipation you can use canned pumpkin, the plain kind. It works both ways actually, it will also help to firm up a dogs stool as well.
For the second part of your question, I would follow your vets advice 100%, you never, ever, ever, want to mess around with Parvo. If you are unsure of how long he wanted you to keep the puppy quarantined then I would contact him again and ask him to clarify. Kudo's to you for taking in a sick puppy, I hope things go well with his recovery. |

years ago I got a puppy from a breeder. On the 17 mile trip home the puppy vomited in the car which I thought was car sickness. At home I stayed out in the yard with her just in case she got sick again. By that evening she had bloody diarreah and I took her to the Vet. hospital. She died that night from Parvo. I had another dog who was 18 months old and had already had two Parvo shots, but she got sick just the same. Parvo is a horrible disease and most always fatal in puppies. Anyway the night I took the puppy to the hospital I called the lady who had the littermates and told her the puppy has Parvo. She right away started giving very small dosages of the serium to all the puppies and none of them died. She told me to tell the Vet. to start giving the medication, but he wouldn't. He hooked her up to an IV drip to hydrate her but it didn't work at all.
As far as not having a bowel movement, you could ask the Vet. if it's normal. If she hasn't had much solid foods, I wouldn't think she would have one for a few days. I sure hope everything works out for you and the puppy. You must be an angel to help out like that. Whoever put that puppy in your care must have known it had Parvo, and they probably couldn't afford to help it. It's too bad they at least did not give you the choice. Is there anyway of finding out who did that? Maybe if you found them you could at least get them to do lots of work around your place to pay for the Vet. bill, which I know is staggering. |

Several things could be causing the problem for the poor little guy, stress of being in new surroundings, around new people as well as just the over all shock to the body of dealing with the parvo as well as some pretty heavy antibiotics. In my opinion I'd be thankful that he's no longer dealing with the squirts and not having to worry about dehydration as is so common with parvo pups and allow his system time to catch up. He will go in time I'm betting but personally constipation wouldn't be a worry for me until he's been eating solid food for at least two or three days, drinking well and feeling a bit more like himself. If after three days it still is a problem then I'd seek the opinion of your veterinarian, by trying home remedies at this point you may very well put him back on the road to the squirts and dehydration. jmo Good luck with the little guy and thank you for taking him in and being such a thoughtful and caring person! Hugs to the pup! |

Well he did have a bowel movement of course it was while I was at work so I had to clean his kennel during my lunch break.
Cal, I am very worried as I have a 7 months old pup, who has had all her Parvo shots but had some contact with Riley. I took her in on Friday and she got an adult parvo booster which the vet said would boost her immune system, i have some holistic supplements coming in the mail and will start but those on her food as soon as it arrives. I can't believe the Vet wouldn't start meds for your poor pup. The Emergency Vet started both the IV and meds and he continued them at my regular vets all day Friday. Riley never had the bloody diahrrea that we saw and neither of the Vets saw any. Thanks for the adice. |

My dog Bailey had Parvo when she was about 5 months old, even though she had been vaccinated for it. I think she got it from the stray dogs coming in my front yard. It is important to wash your entire house down with bleach and water. Parvo can stick around for up to a year. I even threw away my shoes so I couldn't track parvo to my friends houses.

Parvo scares me to death. How long does a dog stay infectious once they get it? You have a young puppy, dont you.. the little one in the avatar? I'd be so careful. So very careful. I think that even after the vet OKs the dog to be with yours, I'd still hold off a bit. And I've be scrubbing everything that pup came into contact with.

The pup in the avatar is actually my parents pup. So I haven't been around him...thankfully. Parvo evidentally runs its course in about 3-5 days per my Emergency Vet. I bleached everything i could Friday afternoon. Even things the Puppy couldn't have touched. I actually have a bleach spot on my carpet from where I tried to see if I could get a spot without it bleaching the carpet, but it bleached it, however atleast that spot it disinfected...it is the one spot he poo'd in the apt. I am planning an taken a damp rag with a small amount of bleach on it and going over my carpet. He is in one bedroom now and I am going to steam clean the carpet and bleached everything that can be bleached in that room when he is allowed out. His poo looked firm not as firm as I guess a totally healthy dogs would be but better than runny diahrrea. Thanks for all the advice, more is welcome!! |
