New litter of puppies
My dog had a litter of seven puppies. They have been eating solid food for almost three weeks and drinking water out of a bowl on their own. They do not use the bathroom in their box and they cry when they need to go outside to potty and to eat, and come when you call them. When do you think that these puppies will be able to leave home. The mom has not nursed them at all in three weeks. Are they ready to leave?

If they are of the tiny breed, then I'd say 3 months. Of course I think I'd have to say 3 months for all puppies. Even if the mom is no longer nursing them, she is still teaching, and they need this time with her.

Yeah I agree. Just because a puppy is eating doesn't mean it's ready to leave it's mom. Lucy was adopted from the shelter at 6 weeks and left her mom at 5 weeks and she never learned bite inhabition she still play bites me.

Yeah, basic rule is....if it's a toy breed (or mix) then it should remain with its mother until 12 weeks of age and all other breeds can leave at 8 weeks. It doesn't matter how long they've been eating on their own. That has nothing to do with it.
It is illegal to give away/sell a pup under 8 weeks of age. Cass. |

The mom is a Dalmatian Lab mix and I am not sure what the dad is. By the looks of the puppies I think that it was a shepard mix. The mom doesn't have anything to do with them. My little Jack russel mix pays more attention to them then the mom. They are five weeks and three days old.

5 weeks is way too young. They need to remain for another 3 weeks. As I said before...it's actually illegal in most places for them to be placed before 8 weeks of age.

I have to agree with everyone. My puppy's mom stopped nursing her at like 3.5 weeks and the owner thought they were ready to go at 6 weeks...now my puppy wants nothing to do with other dogs and never learned that nipping with jaws of death isn't nipping. The longer you wait the better.

I agree with everyone else - the pups need to stay together until they are 8 weeks old (12 weeks is preferable though).

Can I ask what the story is with the mother and how she became pregnant and what not? Just curious.
I also agree. 5 weeks is WAY too young for puppies to leave their mother. I personally say 12 weeks is the most responsible, but ATLEAST 8 weeks. (Some states made it illegal to sell/adopt out puppies under 8 weeks). |

I keep my pups around 10-12 weeks. Just so they pick up the "No's" of the world. Some mothers will start weaning there pups on there own. Pushing them away, growling when they nurse. Thats just moms way of saying "Its time to leave the next". Just because there eating fine, and doing fine away from mom. Doesnt mean there ready, even If she's a large breed dog. I'd keep them with her from 8-10 weeks of age. If she's a mix and you have no idea who the dad is. Was she adopted or did you just leave an unspayed female outside and she got pregnant? Sorry If that sounds harsh, but It isnt something to walk by. Its a very BAD idea to let a dog outside unaltered for long lengths of time, specially If theres unaltered males around
