The smell I believe you're smelling is his anal glands.

I'd take him to a vet or groomer and have them express them for you. Some will actually show you how to do it as well.

Some dogs cannot express their anal glands properly (normally when pooping -- some dogs will scoot their butt across the floor), so be sure to keep an eye on it after this because they can become infected.

As far as him eating his own poo, there is really no scientific explanation for it. No one really knows why.

Best solution... pick up the poop! Prevention is the key.

Give him a little fresh pineapple each day for a couple of weeks to stop the habit. If after two weeks he tries it again then go back on the pineapple. It does work perfectly.
I agree with Icey about having the anal glands expresses IF that's where the smell is coming from.

Undigested foods in fecal matter is the number one reason any animal will eat stools other than maternal care for young.

My mom's dog's butt smells bad for a completely different reason. She's a german shephard and has a really big fluffy tail. The fur on her tail keeps her butt from drying completely after she goes to the bathroom and she has puppy "diaper rash."
