Canned dog food...
My mom said my aunt got a new miniature pinscher puppy (probably from a byb) but she feeds him only canned dog food? This can't be good for him right? Don't dogs need dry food for their teeth. And don't puppies need puppy food? This is the same aunt that tried to talk me into giving her Lucy when she came over one time. She even got mad at me and cried when I said no.

I would not feed canned food for so many reasons but that's me.
If I had a puppy, I'd feed real foods and quite possibly feed green tripe, raw goats milk, eggs, organs and meats. If I were to feed commercial foods, I'd try grain-free foods like Honest Kitchen, EVO or Nature's Variety. |

I feel bad for the poor little guy. She also has two other dogs who are fed crap food but it's dry food and not canned. A 12 year old pomeranian and a 1 year old mutt who lives outside as the "yard dog". If I try to recommend foods she gets very angry with me so I have given up.

I feed Lucy canned food, but thats because she won't eat dry kibble. I rescued her almost 2 years ago from an abusive home who starved her..I don't understand why shes so picky. I tried the not giving her anything, so that she would only have the kibble..but she still wouldn't touch it, and lost a substantial amount of weight. So she gets Kirkland Signature brand canned food once a day, and then my mom makes her chicken and she gets that as well.
I would rather feed her canned then allow her to starve. |

DL - Yeah, feeding is a touchy subject. Good luck there...
What if the "dog food fairy" came? |

This dog i'm sure would eat anything you gave him since he is about 8-9 weeks old. I understand why you feed Lucy canned food though. My grandmother's dachshund Hogan is very picky too and will only eat canned food because of his teeth. He eats little chewy bones though so they stay fairly clean.

Giving a puppy at that age straight canned food can turn his stomach sour. Give him bad gas, and runny stools. It can also make him sick and throw up, he needs puppy kibble. If she wants to give him canned thats fine, but pure canned Isnt good for them. I'd try a Grain-free kibble, personally I'd recommend EVO I hear very good word about this brand

Iagree he should be on a good quality puppy food, although I'm not opposed to canned food, I don't think feeding nothing but canned is good either unless the circumstances are exceptional (as they are with Punkygirl's Lucy and as it was with my Jesse).
Try giving them a sample of good quality puppy kibble...something that will last long enough for them to see benefits. I won't hold my breath that that will work though. Some people just don't care about things like that. Cass. |

Honestly, as long as he gets to chew on bones and such, I don't see what's so wrong with it. Dry food doesn't do tons for teeth anyways. Canned food generally has higher meat content...
