Try a puppy kong. You can fill it with canned puppy food and freeze it. It will take him a long time to get the goodies out and the cold will sooth his gums. Puppy nylabones are good too. They are softer and have little nubs on them to massage gums. If he isn't a really hard chewer you could try a chilly bone. It is a canvas / cloth bone that you soak in water or diluted chicken broth and freeze solid. He can lick and chew on it. It is best to have those outside though since they can make a mess but my pups absolutely loved them. Don't worry about throwing toys away. That just leaves room to buy new fun toys. I try to throw toys away when my dogs are out in the backyard and can't see me. I toss them in the can out front so they don't have a clue where the toys went and won't cry for them.

I have always used Kongs... they are great! As for stuffed toys... my dogs LOVE them. Just be sure that he is not able to rip pieces off or rip it open to pull out the stuffing (although it is a very fun game!!

I know where you're coming from. When Gabby was a puppy, I bought her all of the "approved" toys--Nylabones, kongs, etc. She didn't touch them. She preferred the rope toys, stuffed toys, etc., which were unsuitable for chewing. Finally, I got her to chew on a bone from the pet store. Up to this day, bones are the only chew toy she likes (with the exception of a stuffed kong).
Stuffed toys are great for games like fetch. They're not suitable for chewing. As far as rope toys go, I really like the Kong dental ropes (I'm not sure what their "official name" is). They have a Kong toy on the rope, and the rope is soft and designed to help floss and clean the teeth. It's sturdy enough for Gabby and Trish to play tug-of-war and can withstand a good (supervised) chew, but it's also gentle enough that it won't hurt the gums. Sterilized natural bones might be too big for your puppy at this age, but when he gets older, they make a great chew toy, and most dogs love the taste of them. The hollow ones are the best, since you can stuff them with treats. A puppy Kong is a great toy, especially if you stuff it with canned food, peanut butter, etc. You can also try slipping an ice cube inside. It's hard for most puppies to get out and will entertain them, yet when it melts, it will slip right out, and it's water, so there's no need to wash the kong out. |

You're never a bother! That's what this forum is for. Welcome, by the way.
My Doberman and Chihuahuas loved stuffed animals when they were younger, but alas.......they would rip them to smitherines, so no more stuffed animals. Next we tried Nyla bones, plain ones and the ones with nubs. Those hold up well to my hard chewers. (all three) I got a couple of Kongs, a small and large and those are usually a hit, especially when stuffed with peanut butter or whatever. The Chihuahuas and Doberman exchange toys and the Chi's don't care if it's a big bone or Kong...they still chew away. So, for us, it can only be something very tough or they'll destroy a toy. One does need to be careful about things with threads, strings, material, stuffing, small parts etc. It would be bad news if they swallow any of that. |
