Hello everyone ! I having a problem putting some weight on my 5month old pup (By the way her name is Precious Lady and she is a Boxer ). She is very thin in the sides .I feed her Iams large breed puppy dog food .She dont have worm of any sort and she is not sick. She's getting bigger but she look like she's not eating enough dog food or is missing somthing in her diet. What is something that you would recommend to fatten her up some ?

You can try feeding her a little more each meal. Did your vet tell you she needs to gain a little weight? Puppies sometimes look a little skinny and their ribs show a tiny bit, especially when eating or drinking. As long as your vet says her weight is fine I wouldn't worry too much. I always thought my pups were too skinny but they filled out nicely by 7-8 months of age. Your vet can give you something to add calories to your pups food to help gain a little weight. We had to do that with our german shorthair because he ran so much when hunting and we couldn't hide his ribs.

I don't know a whole lot about the breed, but I do know the young boxers I've seen here and there, really seemed thin and ribby, but it seemed like it was pretty normal for them. Neighbor has one.. as he's matured, he's filled out. As a puppy, he was very thin.

You really don't want your puppy to be too heavy she should be lean. There should be a nice tuck between the ribcage and the hips. When you feel for the ribs it should take light pressure to feel them.
That said, the boxers I know have always been on the lean side, to the point that the ribs are visable. They eat plenty of food but seem to burn off whatever is given. The more you feed the more they use. However, feeding more (especially carbohydrates) can result in excellerated growth which can cause problems in large breed dogs. I would consult your vet about her build and see what he recommends. If the vet suggests trying to increase the dogs weight I would suggets adding something that has a high percentage of protein and fat when compared to carbohydrates. Raw pork is a great option becuase most cuts of pork contain a good amount of fat. If you don't want to go the route of feeding raw then the kibble EVO by Innova is a good option. |

Just for future reference Iams is pretty much crap health wise for dogs it really is. Eagle Pack is really good so is Innova but Innova is pretty expensive. And Chicken Soup for the Dogs Soul. I know this wasent the question you asked but just alittle bit of extra info for you.

I agree that Iams isn't exactly the best choice. You pay more for commercialism than quality. I'd go for something with more nutrient value like the ones mentioned, or Wellness is pretty good too. You'll actually find you get to feed her less but that's because it's a "heavier" kibble. If you still think she's too thin you could always add some meat to her kibble.

Our dogs are now on it and their coat is soooooooooo much shinier, and they only poop once a day versus almost 3 times a day. And it is firm too! (Ok, a little to much info there. lol) So yep, Chicken Soup is a really good dog brand. |
