Question How do I give a time Out?

Hi, my 6 week old pup is teething.....an a lot of the time he does chew on his numerous toys......my problem is that when he decides to chew on my other dog or family member he doesn't stop....he sleeps in his crate at this age....so i don't want to put him in there when he is being bad.......any suggestions on what to do? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated

My advice is whenever he is chewing on something or SOMEONE gentely remove him from that thing or person and give him thee correct toy to chew on.

Furry, a tiny puppy that age *never* deserves a time-out. You have to teach him what you want him to do. Instead, when he starts chewing inappropriate things (dogs, people, chair legs, etc.) interupt him by calling his name or clapping your hands or saying AH AH! and then immediately give him something you want him to chew on, like one of his toys or even better, a gummy Nylabone. Be sure and tell him what a good puppy he is when he stops chewing on you or your dog or the chair leg. BTW, if you find yourself getting frustrated with the puppy, just leave the room and the puppy for a few minutes.

I agree, that if you become frustrated you should remove yourself from the situation. However, you should not leave your puppy unattended. I am sure this is not what you meant Kit, but I thought it should be clairified. I will, on occasion, use my dog's crate as a way to give myself a "time out." So placing the dog in the crate is not about punishing the dog but allowing myself time to calm down. I will put him in the crate with a treat and this gives me time to regroup and figure out how to best deal with the problem that was frustrating me. (It is imparative to make sure the dog views the crate as a positive place so that they don't become hesitant to go in there.) Then once I regroup I am better able to deal with the problem.

You could try a puppy playpen to keep the little guy contained. It is a lot bigger than a crate and you could put it in the kitchen or anywhere you have tiled floor (easy clean up of accidents). Fill it with his toys and a bed. When you want to take a shower, talk on the phone or run a quick errand you can place him in there so he can't run a muck. I used to put a frozen, stuffed kong in with my pups to keep them from crying so I could get a few minutes of quiet when I needed a little break. Young puppies take so much attention and time, you need a 10 minute breather now and then. It will get easier, *sigh*...they grow up so fast.....*sniffle*.

I use to have time outs with Lyric....not to be confused with punishment. But when I needed a nap or needed to get something done, or if he was driving me nuts, I would calmly and nicely put him in his crate with a chew toy and let him chill. There was no association with what he was doing...no anger or punishment. I also made sure he got enough exercise so he would be fairly tired off and on through the day. And at those times, he'd chew his toy, then fall asleep and I'd have a "time out." LOL.

For chewing or biting you, I'd do like Fury, Owned by Lucy and Kit said. I like Barrett's idea too!
