"Nothing is ever easy"
|
I don't think so. I think this is just the way the "wipe". My dogs have never done it, except when they've had really loose poop and it sticks to their butt. My Ferret does it when she is done going to the bathroom, and it is just to "wipe" you could say. But if you have a concern of worms, I'd suggest a fecal exam by a vet.

It could mean alot of things.
Sometimes its just a good way to clean their butt. However, if you notice it is being done frequently, it could mean worms, and it could also mean impacted or inflamed anal glands, or the dog is just naturally trying to get them expressed. How old is your puppy? How often do you see the "butt dragging"? Impacted anal glands will also give off a really bad smell, and your dog will be sensitive under the tail around the anus. Impacted anal glands can be painful, and without treatment can cause infection and a world of problems. My best advice, if you are seeing this behavior often, and you're not sure why, take your pup to the vet. An office visit should do it, and then you'll know for certain and you can get your pup back on the road to health. |

Like it was mentioned before you really want to get it checked out. My dog had his anal glands rupture, and let me tell you that was not fun. Besides him almost dieing, he was a really sick pup for quite some time. The vet can check them out and it is an easy fix, most of the time, if they are. As far as worms I would imagine, but I could be wrong, that you would see some evidence of the worms in the dogs droppings.

I sometimes think you can't always see worms in a dogs stool, especially if they aren't infested. But, if you've never seen any signs of worms in the pups stool, then it just may be his anal glands. A vet check can clear any of it up!

its more likely to be impacted anal glands.
Sometimes a small impaction can be unblocked this way if its just a build up from loose stools so only worry if its happening a lot. its a bit of a myth that worms cause "butt-dragging" |

Many types of worms aren't detected by looking at the stool with the naked eye. Miscroscopic examination by a veterinarian would tell if there are any parasites in your pup.
There are a few types you can see just by looking with only your eyes. One very common worm that is visible is the tapeworm. They look like grains of rice. Your problem does sound like anal glands though. A trip to the vet is the best thing to cure your worries and your pup! |
