Hi everyone,
This is my first post here. I currently have a 13 year old Cocker Spaniel named Trusty and a 3 year old Dachshund, Buster. My family and I decided on getting another dog, which would be a Weimaraner. From what I read they are supposed to be great loving and affectionate dogs. Very smart and beautiful too. I'm not really sure if getting a another male or female dog would be a better choice. None of my family cares if the dog is a male or female. My mom only wants a male more than a female because she never had a female dog before and isn't sure of the differences in temperament. Any suggestions would be very helpful! |

Females tend to beg for attention while males like i. Males are more agressive while females are more calm. Other people on here can tell you a lot more than I can. I would get a girl. Most of my pets are girls and I really like them. I have a little boy and a Weim. is a bigger dog so hummm I have never had a big male.. I guess I would experiment and get a boy .. opps changed my mind lol..

Well, I don't have any experience with weims, but I can give you a bit of info on the female part. I believe though, that it depends solely on the dog itself, as well as the temperment of the parents.
Females are said to be more aloof and to themselves. I find this not true, but with some may be a different case. My 2 girls just love to be cuddled and loved on. Another thing is mood swings. Females tend to have big mood swings especially when comming into heat. Females come into heat at about 6-9 months of age, for 3 weeks and every 6 months after that, but times can vary among females. During this time, they can become depressed, sometimes very grouchy, sleepy, etc. Just about how you would feel around this time LOL But, during about the 2nd week (10th or 11th day), they can become very anxious... such as always wanting outside, urinating frequently, etc. because this is the peak breeding time and they want to find a mate. During this time, they should never be left alone! Especially with you having two males. Even if they're neutered, they can still "tie" with her. Being left alone outdoors is absolutely out of the question, because males can smell her from miles away, and just because you may have a fence, doesn't mean they can't get through. Males will do ANYTHIGN to get to a female in heat. Whether it be digging under, climbing, chewing... and yes, even mating through the fence, which isn't uncommon. One way you can solve all of this is SPAYING. It also gives her a much healthier life because you free her of any cancers or health issues concering these organs. Females aren't very challenging either when comming to showing who is alpha, unelss it's towards another dog. My oldest sibe is alpha of the dogs , but not to the humans. I've heard that males can give you more trouble while training, but seeing that I haven't owned a male from a puppy, I couldn't tell you. Hrm, I guess it's just really hard to say how a female dog acts, compared to a male dog, because IMO, it's based soley on the dog, and/or the temperment of the dog's parents. Novel here owns weims, and I'm sure could give you some better info than I could on the breed! |

Are the both Fixed? i am rele not sure about this one, but maybe you should get a male since you kno how to handle them... females are very diffrent than males, but either way i am sure that ur new pup will fit right in... also wondering, y a Wiem? I love those dogs but how long did it take for you all to decide on THIS Breed?? just take things slow and dont rush!! but good luck!

Females are more protective, they are cleaner, they are smarter--they also come into season twice a year-normally. A male is much more laid back than a female. I think they are also a lot goofier and funny in their goofiness. I have GSDs and this is my experience with them.

Thanks for the replies!
ChiChi: My family wants to get another dog because we love them . We also know a couple people who have weims and fell in love with that breed. My house is on 5 acres of land so the dog will have plenty of room to run and be happy. We have been thinking about this for a long time. IceyBlueSibes: Thanks for the info on females! |

Honestly I don't see that there is much of a difference between the sexes. It depends (in my own experience and opinion) entirely on the breed and particularly on the individual dog.
Not that I'm discounting anything anyone has said, it's all great advice and should be taken in and considered when getting another dog. I just personally haven't seen much of a difference between the dogs I've owned (2 male & 2 female) that stood out as being because of their sex. Cass. |

I agree with Cass, much depends on the breed as well as any particular bloodline within that breed. In my breed of choice it has always been the females that are more difficult than the males in my own experiences.

It really does depend on the breed. I have never owned a male dog, I have three females, but I have met male dogs and I have to say I prefer females.

Yup male and female differences vary within breeds themseleves then you have to factor in traits from the parents. Like for example, in sibes the tendency is that females are loving but aloof, they'll simply lie in the same room as you and check on you every now and then for a good scratch and kisses whereas the males are big sucks and pretty much always have to be touching you or at the very least always have you in their view. On the other hand, other breeds are the exact opposite of this.

I have both male and female. My female is a Dachshund...Her name is Duchess. She loves being carried..n when she's carried..she cant get enough of it..she wants me to cuddle her. She'll try to dig her head underneath my arms when i carry her..as to ask me to hug her. She's very friendly with ppl, and she's never showed any aggression towards me. She also loves to kiss me...not just anywhere..she'll go for the lips.
Bingo on the other hand. He likes to think he's the tough dog on the block..by barking at cars..kids on their bikes..or ppl that walk past our yard. Though he's more of a "tough guy" .. he likes to be played with..he likes his attention towards play..unlike duchess who likes her attention through hugging n cuddling her. But he's very affectionate..especially when i come home. He knows the sound of my car, n he'll start barking when he hears it. When i come out of my car, i can see him wagging his tail so hard his whole butt shakes. Then he'll smother me with kisses n jump up on me. Both male n female..for me has their major differences. But, they're both affectionate..but the female is more affectionate in my case. If you're one that likes to sit with your dog on the couch, n like to do the girly thing with dogs..then female is ur choise. But, if you want a little more..aggressive dog in a playful way..then a male is the choice. thats just a little example with me n my dogs..to help you make the better choice for urself |

Well, I don't know, but I'd almost say go with a feamle because don't Weims tend to be dog aggresive?
I figure if you get an oppisite sex dog, there won't be as big of a chance of issues of same-sex battles. |

Thats a hard one, personally I prefer males and I find them more cuddly and they follow you around more then females do... Thats in my household lol Every one is different and its all in how they were bred and how they are raised.
Best of luck ![]() |
