Those are all good ideas.

Of course, the easiest thing to do is to keep your puppy inside.

I have one of those hard plastic kiddy pools & my dogs love to get in it to cool off. They also sell those kerchiefs that you soak in water that stay cool for hours. I have also seen some blankets like that too. But I must say my 2 on hot days will go out for a little while & then come back in to enjoy the A/C. It is very easy for dogs to overheat which can have disasterous consequences so if they are outside for any period of time it is essential that they have a well-shaded area and plenty of water.

We just don't get really hot weather here on the coast, but if we did I suppose mine would stay inside. I suppose if they are outside playing or taking a walk and it got hot, then I'd make sure there was plenty of shade either way, and have water down or with me.

When doing research on the Bulldogs, I found that they don't do well with heat conditions. It's enough for him to go play for a bit or walk. Poor little guy. We call him the lazy pup, but I honeslty think he just doesn't enjoy being out too much.

My pugs stay inside in the A/C. I think that's the safest bet. But when we are out goofing around, and it's warm, they have a children's pool I half fill with water.

We live in the desert and it is really hot here, we also have a small plastic pool that we keep outside in the patio. Our lab loves to get in the pool to cool off, we change water at least once to make sure he gets fressh cool water. I also place ice cubes in his water to keep him cool. I try to have him outside early morning when the sun is not that strong and late in the afternoon when the sun has gone down the rest of the time he is inside with us.

This is such a useful thread, thanks!

just a few hours ago my mom and i were trying to get Angel to sleep in her kennel... she loves it there, and always goes in on her own (she's a 2 1/2 month old puppy, we've only had her for a few days)...

well it's very hot and humid today and she was sleeping next to her cage on the floor...we realized this was due to the excessive heat, so we tried so many ways to help her cool down... we dont have an a/c unit, so I gave up one of my fans and put that in the room...she finally went inside...

What I'm wondering is, since she hasnt gone for her full check up at the vet, and since she doesnt have all her shots yet, is it ok to wet her with a damp cloth? Or, to put ice in her water? She's very little, she's a papillon/japanese chin mix...

I'm sorry if my question sounds really silly... just in case you have not read my post in the intro section...I am a first time dog owner, and I want to make sure everything is ok for my little puppy...oh and btw, she will be going to the vet in about a week, and the hot wheather will continue until then...

Water is absorbed faster by the body if it is at body temp, not iced.

May i suggest there are cooling collars(sold @ petsmart, Petco etc..) that all you have to do is freeze them for a little while and put them on the dog! Hope my suggestion helps.

We have a Saint Bernard... not good in hot weather. She stays indoors (with fans or A/C) during the afternoon, hottest times of the day. Her walks and play times are done during the morning and evening hours. We fortunately live right behind a river, so she goes swimming every day. She also has a kiddie pool in the yard; and a section of the yard is covered by a tarp for constant shade. We refill her three water bowls with fresh water frequently. And add ice cubes. Sometimes we'll drape cool, wet towels over her to help with her comfort level.
I haven't yet bought any of those neck or bed coolers, but they're great ideas.

My bulldog loves to be outside so I bought her a kiddie pool, she has the gel neck wrap, I also have a mister to use when we travel but her favorite is the pooch pops! I get them at petsmart and they come in cheese and beef flavors.
