Hi I am new and my puppy has pneumonia

Hi all, I have been reading this for some time-our new puppy(6/8/05) broke his leg, and had to have surgery-THEN got pneumonia

now I have to give him injections and I am SOOOOOO worried!

Can anyone give me TLC points and helpful hints---he doesn't want to drink much but looks pretty healthy-----don't want him to aspirate
so I am giving him syringe water anymore..................!Help I am so

One easy way to give injections is to do it while your pup is eating. I had to give my dog Bailey injections when she was a tiny pup. I would give her canned puppy food (it taste better and keeps her attention) and then give her the injection while she was gobbling down her food. She never even knew I did it. I pinched up the skin between her shoulder blades and gave the injection just under the skin, making sure not to get the muscle. A trick is to smash the food into the bowl so it is harder to eat. That gave me extra time to get my hands to stop shaking and to get the nerve to actually do it. After the second time I had no problems and I wasn't scared. Bailey never made a peep when I did it but when we went to the vet for vaccines she screamed her head off. The food is the best trick.

thanks so much- I will try it! What about getting them to drink? He doesn't seem to feel like drinking--but does not look dehydrated(per vet)- thanks , Scarlett

The Vets. have something for pets that's even better than baby Pedialyte as it hydrates more quickly than water. I don't remember the name but you could ask your Vet. If they don't have it then go to Wal-Mart and buy their brand. It's much cheaper than the Pedialyte brand and is the same thing. You can even freeze it in ice cube trays. (a tip from my Vet.) It's lasts much longer that way, because if you read the label, it has to be used within 48 hours I think.

As long as he is drinking a little bit during the day don't worry too much. A good test for dehydration is to pull the loose skin on the back of his neck up. If it lays back down really fast he is fine. If it stays up and goes down slowly he is dehydrated. When Bailey was really sick and refused to drink I used a little syringe (with out the needle) and squirted water into her mouth every two hours. You can soak your pups kibble in a little bit of water or give him canned food too. That will help until he wants to dring normally again. Good luck and let us know how things are going.

Hey there-well I gave him his second shot of Naxcel tonight-he gave me a dirty look while my daughter held him. He is actually hers....the only thing I worry about giving him his shot while he's eating is if he were to aspirate if he yelped or such......the same with the syringe:
my vet said to just be really careful b/c if I pushed the fluid too fast with the syringe he could aspirate....and it's true! I hope I didn't harm him already........any hoo, I REALLY appreicate all the support here, I am head over heals for him! His name is Joby! He is a Blenheim.

Does he like ice cubes at all? Maybe try some chicken broth and turn it into ice cubes for him as well.

great-will try it- also I read my post again and wanted to clarify that
I was worried about giving him water by mouth with the syringe
not the injection. He seems a bit better today-played hard this am.

Sometimes crushed ice with just a tad bit of cold chicken or beef broth over the top is enough to get them to want it and it goes down a bit easier than straight water.

Adding a little sugar or karo to the water also helps. Always a worry when using the syringe to help them drink thats for sure. I've always found it helpful to prop them up on a pillow or two so their head is much higher than their butt helps as well.

If this is an antibiotic, did your vet say to give it sub Q (just under the skin)? Or is it suppose to go IM (intramuscular)?

I do hope he gets well soon. Keep us posted. That was an unusual thing to have happen, wasn't it.

took him back to the vet that did the surgery today.....and he is reallly worried-he said we may have to think about some touch decisions soon. He is still eating and drinking- but still has a fever
and a horrible cough----he is on SQ antibiotic Naxcel which is used
for large animals and dogs with bad infections......we are so sad- and
not sure what to do next.....his white count Friday was 39.
