HELP! This is driving me crazy
Hello- We are going to be taking Chance to obedience school pretty soon, but just wondering if there is any advice beforehand to help us out.
Chance is the dog we adopted from the SPCA, just for anyone who doesn't remember. He has really done great here and is such a wonderful dog! They said he wasn't house trained, but has yet to have any mishaps. (yeah!!!) He loves to play outside with us and can follow some basic commands. He also, knows his "new" name already. The problem is jumping. Whenever someone comes in the door, he will get really excited and jump. The main problem is that he digs with his paws when he jumps and that I have 2 small children so he becomes taller than they are. He also does this open mouth thing while jumping. It's not really a bite and I know he is being playful, but... it's not good. We've tried to ignore it until he sits and then praise him for that and then give him attention, but it gets hard to do with the little ones. After just looking at this post, I know this is all pretty big and there isn't a "quick fix", but.... Any suggestions? Thanks! Lori |

Lori I have seen Dr harry deal with this problem by putting the dog on a short lead and getting people to come to the door ,keep him in check and tell him stay then give him a treat for being obedient. Eventually he will realise that by sitting quietly when people come he is making you happy
![]() ps: have to confess I am hopeless at making my dogs do anything, But I do watch the shows lol |

Thanks both of you!! He has really been catching on to a lot of things. I have him "stay" until I fill his food and water bowls, which I feel shows a lot of restraint for him. So, we are hopefully on the right road. He's such a great dog and I am so happy he found us. Thanks again, I will try the things you mentioned.

In addition to Linnie's great advice, I might just add that you ask your guests, when they come in the door ahead of time (if possible) to not pay attention to the dog until he sits. Put him in a sit every time you pat him for a while, at least. (he can't jump up if he's sitting) Give him the idea that when he sits nicely to be greeted, THAT'S what gets him the attention and treats, and no other way. With the little ones, you'll have to supervise and either use a leash or pull him off and ask for a sit. I know...you can't wait around for him to get off of small children. Keep greetings as low key as possible. I know what you mean with the open mouth knocking against you in his excitement....(been there, done that with big Dober teeth. LOL) Keeping things as low key as possible is the key. (pardon the pun) And if he gets you with his teeth, yelp like it really hurts.
It sounds like you're doing a great job with him. |
