Sick Puppy...????????

I just got an 8 week old pug/beagle mix and had her fecal exam at the vet which resulted in a positive for bacteria....her stool was a little loose so we figured that was the reason. They put her on Albon, in which I had to give her a whole pill the first day and half a pill for the next three days...today is the third day for the half pill, but she has developed pretty bad diarrhea which showed some blood. I tried to do some research and i found that Albon is mostly given for the bacteria Coccidia which signs include diarrhea and blood in the stool...But Albon's side effects also includes diarrhea...So i'm thinking its a combination of the bacteria and the medication that is causing it, but i'm not sure. I called the Vet but had to leave a message, and she hasnt called me back and I'm worried. Is anyone familar with Albon or Coccidia? Should I give her the last dosage of her medicine? HELP

I am familiar with Coccidia. Both of my dogs got it as tiny little pups. They experienced bloody diarrhea. They were put on a licquid medicine ( I think it was an antibiotic) for 7 days and I was also instructed to give them liquid Immodium (5cc per dose for a 4-5 pound pup). I can call my vet and find out what the name of the medicine was.

Has she had the diarrhea for the last three days, or did it just begin again today? It sounds like it just started up again. You need to keep calling your vet until you get through. I probably would not give her the last dose, since there seems to be problems and you're not sure what the cause is. If it's the meds, you don't want to further aggravate the problem, if it's not the meds, than your pup still has some sort of gastrointestinal issue, and may be in need of a different med since the Albon doesn't seem to be helping.

What is she eating for her meals? She should be on rice with some chicken or burger mixed in for flavor. Her stomach needs a chance to readjust to the meds and needs to remove the bacteria. The rice is easy on the stomach and is like eating soda crackers and 7up for humans after the stomach flu.

I hate that every Vet. things all cures come from medications. Anyway I would get another opinion anyway. For every type of medication, there are bad side effects. I sure hope your baby finds the right help. I'd take away solid food for about 24 hours and give only Pedyalite. Then start her on boiled brown rice and chicken.

When I used to have problems with intestinal issues, that's what the vet always prescribed for my dogs too... but with a change in diet, I very rarely have problems anymore, and we have been antibiotic free for over 6 months now, with no intestinal problems.

Thanks for ur help! My vet finally got back to me and told me to give her the last dosage and feed her rice for now. If it doesnt get better by Sunday, he had me come pick up Metronidazole so I dont have to wait through the long weekend.
What is bothering me is that she doesnt act sick! She still seems like a happy playful puppy...She does sleep quite a bit, but so do all puppies! I'll let you guys know when she gets better..I HOPE ITS SOON!
