Puppy Worms
Hi everyone!
Thank you so much for responding to my previous thread... I am still recovering from my back surgery so I havent had the opportunity to purchase any books... We took Angel to the vet, and she has worms...I dont know what type of worms, as when we got her she was worm free. Anyways the vet gave us this white powder stuff to put in her food once a day, but there's a few questions I have... 1) She doesnt eat her food anymore...she has had the worms for awhile I guess, so my mom thinks that it must be due to the medication in the white stuff...she is still more than happy to eat her treats...so what do we do???? 2) She appears alot more lethargic...is this due to the worms? to her shot (which she got yesterday)? or to the anti mosquito medication? 3) Today she has been VERY nervous... her heart has been beating alot faster than usual, is this something to worry about or could it be due to the storm we had? If anyone can tell me more about these worms, I would like to know about that too. Thanks again for all your help! |

Since she just got her shots yesterday and is acting much differently today you really should at least phone your vet. It very well could be a reaction to the vaccines.
Your vet also needs to know that the wormer is not being ingested so that an alternative medication can be used. |

Sunds like you got panacure (the white powder). This is a normal thing given for various worms... whips, round, hook.... I'm surprised your vet didn't tell you which and explain them. I'd definitely call and ask for more of an explanation and give details on your dog's reaction and activities since her last visit.

Not all worms can be seen with the naked eye, but if she hasn't been taking her meds, then I wouldn't be surprised if there are still worms there. I agree with calling and talking to your vet. Be sure to tell him (like what was said) that the meds are not being taken.

I spoke to the vet and she said that we should continue the medication until prescribed. She said that because she's a small puppy (3 lbs) this is the best medication for her (panacure). We are suppose to re apply it next week. She said that as long as she eats half of what's she's suppose to it's ok, as the worms could be the root of her lost appetite (she still loves her treats though)... so time will tell.
Btw, the 'worms' are really not as bad as i thought. I saw the tiny dot in her poo, I thought it would be alot more gross. |

Aww, poor pup.
Yep just about every puppy gets worms. The breeder should have given her a dose of wormer before she went home to you. Your pup might get another dose with each vaccination. That was the schedule for both of my dogs when there were tiny pups. It takes a few days for the worms to die and end up in the poo. You might see them in the poo for a few days too, depending on how bad she has them. |

She was dewormed when we got her, but the vet said that it may take another 2 times before completely getting rid of them, and that it's normal.
Barrett- the vet said exactly that...that every time she gets vaccinated she may need a new dose of panacure. |
