dog eating bug?
Hello,
My puppy is a 7 months old (mix of chow and golden retriever). I seen her eat few beetles that fly across her face. She seems healthy even days after, but I am curious if I should allow her to do that next time. |

Some dogs ( pups especially ) enjoy doing this for some reason and although I don't think its going to do much to her it certainly isn't something I'd enjoy watching. lol
Certain bugs to tend to upset the stomach a bit but other than that it won't really hurt her. You may want to try and discourage her from doing so however before she decides to try out spiders and things of that nature. Depending on where you are there are many types of bugs that are poisonous. |

During the summer I often have a kiddie pool set up for the pugs to wade around in. If it was out during the night, often the next morning it will have some floating millers or other little things in there, and one of my pugs, Raisin, will wade in there and make a game out of trying to get them out of the water. Grosssss. I try to beat him to it and sift them out before he gets them, but I'm not always speedy enough LOL

I am sorry.. the first time I read that.. it came out meaning.. "A bug that eats dogs"
silly me! haha. I guess the flea coudl apply.Anyways, I have labeled my pup "The Bug Hunter" as he will stock any stray bugs in the house and will generally eat them. I guess the odd chunk of protein never hurt, but if I can get to teh bug before him, I do the dirty work. (and no that doens't include eating it )No harm in it. Edit: 5 min after I posted this, Schroeder comes up to me with a squirming ant in his beard silly boy! ![]() |

She seems to enjoy eating it and making that "crunchy" sound. But I guess you are right, keep her away from spider. I've seen a few black widow in the back yard. She once got an unknown cause to many constant diarrhea trip for 48 hours. After a visit to the vet and x-ray found nothing and took some metrodinazole for 10 days, it went away. Up to this day, I still wonder if it was bugs, tree bark, or cleaning detergent chemical that caused it. Other than spider, what other usual bugs are consider bad? I live in southern California in the city.

Haha! Peanuts, I read the title that way too.
Jesse eats ants. I don't know why but he does. If there is a line of them marching across the cement he'll lick them up one by one. : He's never had any ill effects and as long as he sticks to the teeny black ones and not the big bull ants we get sometimes, I just let him be. So don't worry about your pup eating bugs. Just keep an eye out for any that might be able to bite back (like bees etc) and she should be fine. Cass. |

I would say if you are affraid of the insect, (in that it can do damage, aka spiders, scorpions, some ants, etc) I would not allow it. Flies and bettles are prolly not going to do any damage. Both of my dogs attempt to hunt insects and they don't seem to bother them when they do catch them.
