The Name Game

Hershey's registration info came in the mail the other day, (Yay!) now I give him his AKC name. I want something different and creative for his name and I was hoping you guys could help. He's a chocolate lab if you can't tell by the picture and I want to incorporate Heshey.

Here's my husband's ideas:

Stephanie's Hershey Kiss
Stephanie's Heshey's Chocolate Kiss (Yes, he's original..)

Not hot on those...any ideas? Please no Prince or King...not hot on those either...

How about something along the lines of Hershey Special Dark? (Since he is a pretty dark color) I free associate things when I try to brainstorm, so I'll add more as I think of something

I'm not sure about this, but isn't there a limit on the number of letters you can use? I no that UKC is 30 characters.

What was the name of the Kennel he came from?

Sometimes the call name isn't incorporated directly into the registered name -- you can just make a clever sideways reference.

Stephanie's Chocolate Kiss
Stephanie's Cocoa Kiss

(Not saying those are necessarily clever, LOL.)

I happended to be reading your post, I also have a chocolate lab and his name is also Hershey. I got him from a breeder and if I remember correctly she told me that the dog was AKC registered. Should I register him as well?

Is he AKC registered or AKC registerable? She should have given you paperwork either way.

You can call her and ask specifically: "Is this dog AKC registered?" and if so, she should send you the papers for your dog. (I would be surprised if he were already registered, though -- that is typically something the new owner handles.) Ask again if he is registerable. Are his parents AKC-registered? Was the litter registered as a litter? If yes, then the breeder should be able to provide you with the paperwork necessary to register your pup.

If not, then you have probably fallen victim to false advertising by a dishonest breeder. I hope very much that it's the former!

Yeah, I got lucky finding a breeder who had already registered the puppies (and didn't make me keep the parents names -- cocoa pebbles and bambam --thank you breeder!) but if your pup is registerable, it's not too expensive to register, I think it was $10 a pup with our cockers...

Oh and thanks for the ideas! I do want to keep Hershey in his name though... As I said above, he came from Cocoa Pebbles and Bam Bam...not wanting to keep the kennel name. Oh and he has a Hershey's Chocolate Kiss in his kennel already (I think I'm saying that right..) so I don't want that...hmm...I didn't think it would be THIS hard...

It now costs $15 to register AKC. Does anybody know off hand thecharacter count specifications? We plan on registering Buddy after we determine a name and were wondering about that.

Taken from the AKC website, under "register online", "how to guides"

Procedures for Registration Matters

Chapter 2: Naming of Dogs

The person who owns the dog at the time the application for registration is submitted to the AKC has the right to name it, in the absence of a written agreement.
There are guidelines that determine the acceptability of a name. Some of these are as follows:

1. Name choices are limited to thirty (30) letters. Spaces between words, apostrophes and hyphens are counted.

2. All letters in a dog’s name are limited to the standard English alphabet. When registration certificates are printed, all letters are capitalized. Diacritical markings (accent grave, accent acute, umlaut, etc.) are not printed on registration certificates in a dog’s name.

3. Registered Kennel Names cannot be included in a dog’s name unless their use is authorized by the owner of the name.

4. Roman numerals must not be included at the end of the dog’s name. The AKC reserves the right to assign roman numerals for identification purposes. The AKC permits thirty-seven (37) dogs of each breed to be assigned the same name.

5. There are no restrictions on arabic (1,2,3), cardinal (one, two, three), or ordinal (first, second, third) numbers.

6. Words and phrases that may not be included in a dog’s name:
A. Champion, champ, sieger and any AKC title or show term, either spelled out or abbreviated.
B. Obscenities and words derogatory to any race, creed or nationality or transliterations of such words.
C. Kennel(s), male, stud, sire, bitch, dam and female.
D. Breed names alone.

7. An imported dog must be registered with the same name under which it was registered in its country of birth, except for the addition of a Registered Kennel Name.

All dogs' names are subject to AKC approval.

I've yet to figure out why the AKC continues to list "30" spaces since I've yet to see a registration with more the 28. lol

Hmm a name for Hershey....what about Stephs Decadent As Chocolate?
