Car sickness
My pup has been in the car several times now, and sometimes she vomits. I put her in her pet porter in the back seat of my car and the car is always at a comfortable temperature. I plan on taking her lots of places--to my relatives, to the park, etc. Is car sickness something puppies get over, or is it something that certain dogs are prone to?? What can I do to prevent it?? Thanks.

There's really no pattern to the vomiting. Today she vomited and it was many hours since she had last eaten, and it was after a nap. I wanted to wait to feed her until we got to our destination, hoping that it would prevent vomiting, but it didn't. One thing I did notice--she does not vomit when riding in my car, but she vomits in my husband's truck and in my mom's car.

I would think that maybe the excitement of traveling, with the addition of bumps in the car could be catching up to her.
Especially since one car over another, and there is no pattern to her eating. When was the last time she was checked by a vet? Have you mentioned this to them yet? hopefully some other more experienced puppy folks will come on, and help you out. |

Her next vet appointment is next Monday. You are right, I will ask him about it. We do have a pattern for her feeding times, but today we were traveling around lunchtime, and I was afraid to feed her beforehand, so I waited until afterwards (which was only about a 1/2 hour after her normal feeding time). You are right about taking one car over another--we should really try to stick with the same vehicle when taking her places.

Could be the possibility of excitment or even nervousness, how old is your puppy?
A good way to overcome motion sickness, take your puppy on short but regular drives after a while this tendcy should out-grow. It's a good idea to get dogs accustomed to being in a car and on the move and especially important for it to be done at an early age as this will help in later life. There are herbal remidies to help with this sort of problem, such as Bach's Rescue Remedy or D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheramone) which is another good product. I'd consult your vet before trying any products for aiding in motion sickness but other than that it's just getting your little puppy accustomed to being on the move with you .Hope this helps CC |

Boy did my pup Gunnar suffer from carsickness, never did we make it anywhere without him tossing his cookies. Our vet recommended 1.5 mililiters of children's benadryl, worked like a charm and now at seven months he seems to have outgrown it and we haven't used the benadryl in probably two months time. Ginger is supposed to help calm there tummies as well. Check with your vet on the benadryl, it did not make Gunnar drowsy or have any other side effects except for the no vomiting. B/T/W Gunnar is a German Shepeherd so that was the appropriate dosage for his size.

My puppy threw up the first time he went on our car because it was his very first car ride, not to mention it took 2 hours!! But after that, he was fine because the rides were short. We don't keep him in the crate though or puppy porter. We just let him have the backseat with my bros when they're there or I carry him in the passenger seat.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!! I will definitely use all the advice I have been given. BTW, my pup is a 12 week old sheltie. She's a tiny pup, so I will ask my vet about the meds you have all suggested and see what he recommends for her. I like the idea of taking her on short rides on a regular basis--I will definitely do that. Thanks!!

I travel from North Central Michigan to Central Florida and back every year which consists of two eleven hour days of car travel each way. My sheltie also suffered from car sickness at the age of six months. We started out trying to help her by just withholding food before we started out on our trip then every time we would stop for gas or to stretch our legs (hers too) I would offer her maybe a dozen pieces of kibble from my hand, which she would eat willingly and a drink of fresh water. When we started that practice she didn't vomit as much or not at all. Now two years later when we travel south she doesn't have any tummy problems at all. I think they do grow out of it or become accustomed to it.
