7 months old and I don't lift my leg.

I was just wondering if anyone knows when a male dog starts lifting their leg to pee? I have a 7 month old male king sheppard/bullmastiff x who sqwats to pee or rather just stands there and pee's. My neighbors male dog is 4 years old and he sqwats, he doesn't lift his leg. I also have a 14 year old female rottie/sheppard x and I was thinking maybe he doesn't lift his leg because he has no male rolemodel to follow. any feed-back would be welcome.
thanks
mandy

It is different for all dogs, and not a big deal. I have seen some male dogs that only lift while marking, and squat when just going tinkle. Guessing on how big he is going to be I bet he will start lifting anytime now. I would not worry to much, cute dog though.

Dante is almost 2 and still doesn't lift his leg. It's no big deal if they never do. *shrug*

Thanks for the reply. You know how ppl who have baby's get so excited when the baby has his or her first steps? I feel like that, I want to see togo do his first leg-up.

Generaly what promps them to lift their leg is to walk them on the side walk around town or "burbs" where they can smell telephone poles, bushes and such. If they can't squat where the smell is, then they get as close to it as possible and that means lifting the leg. I had a male dog who was 5 years old before he started doing that. It may be that they are not ready to break the apron strings. LOL

I have a five year old boy that still squats like a girl. The only time our big man Drew lifts his leg is when he feels the need to impress the girls and that didn't start until he was almost two.

Avalanche started lifting his leg at about 8 months, and only when we started going to dog shows, where he really smelled the other dogs that were marking everything. Then, he decided to "one up" the other dogs. He rams his hind end up to the pole/tree/wall/whatever he is close to, and proceeds to do this tripod looking stance, and next thing you know, he poops!! It's as if he's saying that he is "King Poo" or something! (Yes, he can be a little odd at times hehe)

Pippin is almost two and recently started to lift his leg a couple months ago. He still squats most of the time to pee, but he'll occasionally hike up his leg and go. I personally prefer him squatting, it's faster (can go anywhere, not just next to something).

Boomer will be 3 in September and has yet to show any interest in leg lifting. Having owned a small male dog before that like to mark his territory on everything he could reach inside the home, I kind of enjoy my little squater.

Don't dogs mostly only squat when they're not neutered?

Same here...I actually can't stand walking the dogs at work who have to mark everything. I'm talking the same bush 3 or 4 times! They just swing their butt around and pee on it from a different angle. I don't mind that Dante still squats.

PS - I love your siggy Pippinislove!
