raw hide or bone ok?

My puppy needs to really chew something that will dull his teeth a bit as well as give him a challenge. His favorite toy seems to be a broom handle.

However i was told raw hide wasn't safe because it can break and and can choke. Is this dangerous? or is it as dangerous as you or me choking on some steak? Is bone the same thing? other suggestions?

You have to watch anything that a puppy chews on. Rawhide CAN break into peices and swell in the intestines causing bloat, we had it happen at my work to a SWEET dog whom I LOVED and we had to put him down as it was by then irrreversible. Always make sure that the rawhide is bigger than the dogs mouth and doesn't seem flimsy.

I prefer kongs, natural bones, and nylabones. Galileo bones are great, our dogs have had their for MONTHS and months!

Most dogs can chew rawhide and not have any side affects from it, buy here are some things that you should know about it.

1. Rawhide does not digest in a dogs stomach and has been known to cause bowel impaction.

2. Some rawhides that are manufactured outside of the United States are cured with formaldehyde (from which formalyn (imbalming fluid) is manufactured

I give my dog bully sticks, dried tendons raw bones or simply a fresh yam to chew on.

MMMM...bully sticks, do you know what they are? LOL, take a guess! I have never given my dogs one, I'm sure they'd love them though.

I agree, most dogs are fine with rawhide. Just watch and make sure they don't swallow large chunks.

Rawhide can be dangerous and it's true, if you must give it be sure the rawhide is bigger than your dogs mouth and is very firm. Even the biggest of breeds can choke on rawhide when swallowed.

Some breeds don't do well with them at all, for my breed of choice they are off limits totally and to be honest even if they weren't I still wouldn't give them. Too many risks when there are so many other, safer options available. jmo

I have to agree with Crossfire on this one. I dont give them to my bullies. One time I tried a pig ear-bad mistake. Of course I watched Shaker the whole time she had it. She chewed the whole thing till it was soft and tried to swallow it whole. I give my dogs nylabones and kongs. Personally, I dont like pigears, rawhide or greenies.

I occasionally give my pooch rawhides. I take it away when it gets too small because he will swallow it if given the opportunity.
FYI: I noticed that rawhides give him gas

I don't know if I could give my dog a bully stick now that I know what they are

My dog won't chew any of the nylon bones- Any suggestions?
He's part cattle dog, which are known to have strong jaws, and can chew thru most items quickly.

I'm not comfortable with giving my boys rawhide. What I do like to give them are large raw beef bones. That always goes over very well.

We do the femur bones.. also I like to buy a rack of beef ribs, cut them up individually. Always raw.

knuckle bones are very good, and as a plus, its hilarious watching Liebe try to get the whole thing in her mouth until she figures out a better way.
once the marrow is accessible she licks it like theirs no tomorrow.
