Whining when happy??

Hi, all- we've just adopted a rescued 6-week old Lab/German Shepherd mix. She seems to be adjusting fairly well (aside from hating to be alone right now) but has a weird trait. She'll whine and howl when it seems like she should be happy- especially when she's eating or chewing a rawhide bone. Is this normal? She also whines at the times I'd expect her to- when we first put her in the crate, etc, but I expect that- it's just the whining with her tail wagging that confuses me. Is this anything I need to be worried about?
Thanks for any advice!

Does she do anything else out of the ordinary like hide in corners or something while she is whining or does it just seem to be an excitement behavior?

No, she doesn't seem to be afraid of anything or nervous. It is mostly when she's excited, although I didn't make that connection until now. If her tail's wagging, there's a good chance she's also whining and/or howling.

My little DDB pup is the same way when really excited, she'll whine, bark, and I swear tries to form words. lol

It sounds like she's just talking to you. My little Jose does that sometimes. As long as she seems happy and healthy, that's what matters. They do have their own little personalities. Congrats on the new pup!

Blackie whines in a happy way before we go for a walk. But he also whines when he gets nervous. I guess you just have to tell the difference between their happy whine and their nervous whine.

This has nothing to do with the subject (well, it kinda does..), but when we took Blackie to the vet and the vet was giving him his "physical" I guess, he laid down and started grunting, because he really likes it when he gets his belly scratched, and he liked the cool floor. Well, the vet thought we was growling at her, but we assured her that was his "happy grunt".
So you just have to tell the difference between a good noise, and bad noise, even if they are similar.

Winston makes some strange primal noises when he plays with toys that make noise. I suppose if he kept it up long enough, it might eventually turn into a howl. Sounds like your puppy's just having a good time and making sure everyone knows it!
