Question can you bath puppies with washing up liquid

my friend said that he washes his dog with lemon washing up liquid coz it makes them smell nice and makes their coat shiny and it gets rid of flees too.
He said that the dog doesn't have any reaction to it or allergies to it.
Would you advise that i wash the puppy with it?
And is it safe?

Dish soap harms the dogs coat. Here is why you should not use anything but shampoo made for dogs.

Quote:
Cleaning preparations with detergent properties generally contain ethyl alcohol (ETOH) to bind a chemical chain to break down oils and grease. Products such as dishwash detergents, heavy duty floor cleaners, window cleaners, spot cleaners and automotive motor oils contain detergent properties. Many consumers equate the word detergent with foam or bubbles. The word DETERGENT has no relation to the amount of lather or foam.
When detergent based shampoo products are used on dogs, cats and other non-pore animals, the detergent will extract the natural oils desperately needed for a healthy coat. In addition, detergent based products will penetrate the skin and the ethy alcohol (ETOH) content may find its way to the fatty tissues and bloodstream lending the possibility of toxic reactions. Ethyl alcohol (ETOH) is a potent central nervous system depressant that may be fatal if blood concentrations reach sufficient levels. Ethyl alcohol (ETOH) may also strip the lipid layer of skin commonly called stripping, therefore compounding problems associated with healthy coat growth. It should be further noted that it is not required by law that Ethyl alcohol (ETOH) be listed on a label.

No it deffinately is not safe!! Especially with puppies!!! Sure the first couple washes may appear good but soon the dog may start getting dry itchy skin, rashes, hot spots, etc. I'd advise your friend to stop using cleaning detergent, a bottle of dog shampoo does not cost much at all.

You should never use dish soap on a dog, especially not a puppy and stick with either dog shampoos or those made for infant children.

Actually crossfire I wouldn't recommend baby shampoo either. Even though it says it's gentle for babies doesn't mean it is for dogs. Baby shampoo is formulated for children that get cradle cap. So it's not good for the skin of your pup.

Something I had never given any thought to Salem but can see your point. Hmm, I learn something new every day! I've always had great results with Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo.

Alright scratch the children's shampoo! Still using it for my bullies though....old habits are hard to break!

Thats very kind of you Salem and I'm always open to better ways of care for my dogs but insist that you allow me to pay you for it.

There are many out there. Make sure that it is formulated for puppies and kittens and that it is soap and detergent free.

In a pinch I have used Murphys Oil soap(on dogs with short hair)it has worked well on my Rottweilers.I would rather use dog shampoo, but with 8 dogs running around sometimes we run out. That seems to be when one of the puppies gets into something they are not supose to.
