Chocolate Lab swimming in Lake
I have another question, we are planning to go to a lake this weekend. Our lab loves water, he is 5 months old. We have never taken him to a lake before.
Since I know they love water we were thinking of taking him with us and allowing him to swim, but I am a bit scared. Do I have a reason to be concerned? |

Just a quick word of caution, as I recently made this mistake. I have a 10 month old puppy who doesn't always come when called, especially when she is distracted. Well, she loves to swim too and was swiming in the lake and a bunch of ducks swam by. She began swiming after them and they swam out into the middle of the lake with her swiming after them. I was so scared and had to swim out and get her, and it was a good thing I did because she got tired and needed help getting back to shore.
Now when she swims she has a 10-20 foot leash on her and I can grab it when ducks come by so she won't take off after them again, which she would. If you dog is really good about coming when called then don't worry, my sister's dog doesn't chase the ducks, but I just wanted to tell you in case it might pertain to your situation. |

I agree, a leash and harness can be used if your dog isn't trained at coming when called. I wouldn't use a collar though.
