Eliminating Question
My puppy is almost 10 weeks old and I have a question. It seems to take her 12 or more hours to eliminate her food. She is only 1.6lbs and I would think it wouldn't take her this long at all.
We noticed she was straining to go when she did go and we switched her to a wet little chunks food and that has helped it ease up but it still takes her hours to eliminate. Is this normal? |

Are you saying that your dog only poops every 12 hours? I would say that is not normal. (maybe I misunderstood you).
Have you had her at the vet yet? I would ask the vet about this. Also, a bit of plain yogurt is very good for their digestive system. I would give a few spoonfulls each night. |

It could be that you need to add 1/2 tsp. of salmon oil once a day to her food or switch to a different brand. Course she will still need the omega acids the salmon oil supplies.

Well, Ive never had a dog this small, but that does not sound normal to me, especially for a puppy. They are usually "potty machines". In fact it is pretty common for a puppy to have to poop within a 1/2 hour of eating.
Maybe because she is so small it takes longer to work through her tiny system. Hopefully someone with small dogs can provide a better answer, but my puppies seem to "go" non-stop. Please check with your vet or even the breeder. |

How often do you feed the puppy? Does he have plenty of water? In a 24 hour period, puppies generally poop the same number of times that they eat. If they are fed 3 times a dya, there's usually 3 poops in 24 hours. Infrequent elimination can be a sign of underfeeding. If it were my puppy, I would call a vet for advice.

I called the vet yesterday just to put my mind at ease and was told that some puppys have their own schedule and go on their own time.
But last night she did much better!! She went twice yesterday and once this morning ( in the hallway, but that was my own fault) but at least she is going. She gets fed 3 times a day. She has water all day long but doesn't ever seem to really be interested in it, but she does have it available to her. |
