Gypsy won't pee when it rains!

At least, not outside. Urgh!

My mother comes home before I do each day so she uaually takes Gypsy outside. But today it was raining so Gypsy wouldn't go potty when she took her out (got to love my mom, standing in the rain for nothing). Mom was getting wet and Gypsy wanted to go back inside so Mom let her back in. But then Gypsy see's the cat and runs after him and jumps on the couch to try and get him. And guess what she does, she pees all over the couch! Poor Mom didn't even have time to stop her. She peed alot, and this was just after she had been outside!

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Gypsy will NEVER go potty while it's raining. As soon as the showers stop she's fine but sometimes it rains all day here. Tennessee is a very wet place, it rains alot.

What should I do?

I am definitely not an expert here, but I can tell you what I did when we had Hurricane Rita come through here and it rained all day. I have a 5 1/2 mos old puppy and I knew he would probably not go out in the yard while it was raining, so I went out and got some piddle pads....the brand I got was Wee Wee pads, but you can buy whichever is cheaper (that's what I did). I got the large size actually so that the puppy could walk on it.

Anyhow, I used the piddle pad in the garage and Mocha did really well on it. I think it has a smell on it that makes them go there. Like the sprays you can buy to make a dog go on a certain spot. I've never tried that, but the piddle pad worked really well for that rainy day we had. Mocha took to it really well that day. I'm going to keep some around just in case we have another rainy day.

My 6 year old Sheltie didn't care for the piddle pad....she went out in the rain, but she's also 6 years old and has never been trained on anything but outside.

Give the piddle pads a try.....someone else might have another idea too.

I'm sure that works great for younger puppies but I don't want to get Gypsy use to peeing in the house. She about five months old now so I want her to be able to go outside.

But thanks for the tip, I'll still keep it in mind.

Have you tried going out with him and giving him his "go pee"
command? My boy hates rain and wet grass ( go figure...he's a cocker, aren't they suppose to like water?)
I don't know if I'm doing the right thing but when it rains and he refuses to go outside for a pee , I go with him and will not let him back in until he obeys the "go pee" command. When he does I give him tons of praise and a treat.

I don't intend to have Mocha trained on the piddle pads...however what I did on that day of the hurricane was a last minute bid to have him not pee in the house. He might have actually gone if I had tried to stay out there with him, but I wasn't going to risk life and limb out in the blowing rain.

Anyhoo, Shadowkins gave you great advice.

I don't plan on using piddle pads all the time. If my older dog can go pee in the rain, Mocha will likely do the same when he grows up.

Your quite right, sharona1973 , I wouldn't push it in a hurricane...chances are I'd probably use piddle pads or newspaper. Glad we don't have hurricanes in Saskatchewan!!
Hope you fared well during Rita!
