Shy puppy toilet training
My puppy has toilet issues!! He wont poop in front of me and I cant get him to poop outside so I can praise him and teach him that pooping outside is a good thing. When I first got him I used the rub his nose in it method but this seems to of made him associate pooping with being something hes not allowed to do in front of people.I havent told him off for pooping for 4 days now but he still wont poop in front of me.
The last 2 nights I have fed him at 6pm and spent the entire evening with him and he hasnt pooped, took him for walks, played with him, let him sleep, still wont poop. Then when I go to brush my teeth at night he goes to the living room (the only room he poops in for some reason) and poops. But every morning he will poop 5-10 minutes after eating. He seems to be able to hold his poop for upto 7 hours even with a huge meal. On the rare occasion I have caught him just about to poop I put him on paper or out the door and he just wont do anything. How do I make him trust me and poop in front of me? Are there any types of food I can give him that will make him poop straight away. I took him out last night as soon as he was fed and he had no interest in pooping. Hes pooped outsode twice and received major praise but its just that he wont poop in front of me. How do i get him to poop in front of me? HELP!!! |

Well basically by rubbing his nose in it, that really set you back. That seems to have been a very old and unsuccessful training method which is no longer used. Your puppy is just a baby, you wouldn't rub your new borns face in a potty mistake; same goes for your puppy.
I would guess to say that your puppy is more relaxed inside than outside. Dogs seem to be pretty intuitive on our moods and if your anxious about having a #2 come from your dog, then he might be to anxious himself. Make being outside fun and upbeat. I would recommend walking him a little to stimulate his digestive system. And when he does go, make sure to praise him tons and give him something really tasty for doing such a good job. With Rocky I could tell you that he has to go around 5:30 every morning. I would take your dog out of the crate to your potty area, let him do his #1 and then wait. If after 5 minutes you don't get a #2, bring him inside, feed him, take him back out. Try again for another 5 minutes, or if you can, just wait until he goes. You can tell if they need to go by watching there little butts. If you see some movement in that back area, you can usually bet that something is ready to "pop" out and just relax, let your dogs attention move away from you and I bet he will go for you. Another tip that I read somewhere is that when your dog has to go, they will start circling left. I have noticed this with Rocky and it seems to be true for the most part. There are a lot of more experienced dog owners and trainers here that could give you better advice, but I say in general make sure that outside times are upbeat and happy so your dog relaxed. Be consisent and patient and it will all "work out", in the end ![]() |
