I'm looking for a really good, basic, puppy book. I have tons of obedience books and have taught obedience so I feel confident about that. What I want is a book about bringing puppy home, nutriention, toys, getting along w/ others, etc... Anyone have suggestions?

You could try 'Puppies for Dummies'.
Not sure how good it is, but it's specifically for the care of puppies (not adult dogs). I would have thought most training books would give you a lot of info though. Don't they usually cover puppy training (house training, socialisation etc...)? As far as nutrition is concerned. You should check out our Health section, there is a sticky (at the top of the forum) that is all about choosing a healthy commercial dog food. There are is also a sticky about a raw food diet too, you might like to read. Perhaps, if the reason you want a puppy book is because you're getting one, you could find a breed book (or books, if it's a cross breed) on the type of dog you're getting. They usually have good (and specific) info on how to raise a pup. Cass. |

How about Dr.John Bower's book " The Dog Owner's Problem Solver". It covers A to Z. You could always see if your local library has it and peruse the book first before buying it...I know I always have it handy.
Just a foot note, I even e-mailed him ( Dr. Bower ) in the UK about my boy and he answered me immediately...I was quite impressed. |

If your looking more for something that goes into the behavior development of puppies as well as the pre-natal stages on through maturity development you may want to check out Another Piece Of The Puzzle: Puppy Development by Pat Hastings & Erin Ann Rouse.

I have "Puppies for Dummies" and "The Power of Positive Dog Training," both of which I like. I also have K.I.S.S. Puppies and it's not so great.

the 'for dummies' books are good. they have just about everything and it's written in plain english.
I have a dog book that's like a Dr. Spock book somewhere...I'll have to see if I can find what it's called. It had a whole section on breed standards too. |

The Art of Raising a Puppy
by New Skete Monks The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy. These monks raise all their GSD's for service (seeing eye dog) work. I also found a way to gain more patience for myself to train as I read it. They just explain and write in this manor. |
