Our Puppy and the cold weather, (snow/rain)

Rocky is 4 months old now and it's starting to get pretty cold here in Ohio. Today we were out in the rain before I took him to the vet, and I swear I saw him shiver I want to get him some doggy cloths, but not really sure if I have found anything worth while. PetSmart has a lot of costumes right now, but not a whole lot in the keep your little dog warm department.

I'm sure I will find something for him, but another concern I have is the snow! His little paws will get so cold and will he even go potty in the snow? What have you all done with your dogs when it snows out, especially when they are pups?

Thanks!!!
- Gerald

I thought cooper would HATE the snow, but he loved it! He hates the cold and he hates the wet, but apparently he makes exceptions for snow!

We got rexie mid Feb, so she was a baby baby when it was really cold outside. Dogs deal with it pretty well, especially since if they are outside, its either a quickie to go potty or they are being active. Rexie didnt have any issues with the cold/snow.

try the PetSmart online store. They have some sweaters and boots. I'd only really suggest the boots if you plan on keeping your dog outside a LOOOONNG time or you are worried about salt or other melt products.
Dog sweaters work pretty good if your dog seems to be shivering and they can be pretty cheap.

I've bought some adorable stuff off of ebay too, clothing wise for the pugs.

Dogs are pretty hardy. They apparently don't get frostbite on their pads. I live in a cold climate and it gets down in the singel digits and even for a week or so the past couple years....like 30 below zero. Of course, that cold....we skip the walks, but they still go out to potty.

I do have little cozy coats for them for when it's about 15 degrees F or lower. But when they're exercising, they tend to keep fairly warm. I do worry about the stand up ears with little hair, so am going to figure something out this year.

Most dogs love to play in the snow....just like kids. LOL.

Rauligh will NOT go potty outside if its raining. He looks at me like "you want me to go out in that? I dont think so." So we keep walking but he'll hold it untill we go inside and then he'll go on the carpet. I dono what to do about that

During the winter I shovel paths for them.. last winter the snow was so deep that they would go down the paths and you couldn't see them. I have to herd them off of the porch and stand guard until they do their business. Two of the pugs I have not had during the winter months, one of which will be experiencing her first winter. Should be interesting.

Petco has some great prices on dog coats and sweaters as well as the boots should you decide you would like some.

PetsMart and Petco should have some warm blanket coats for Rocky but I wouldn't mess with boots right now. If he gets used to them you would have to put them on every thime you wanted to take him potty. I have dachshunds and they run around fine in the snow. We took Bailey up to the mountains and she ran around for two hours and didn't complain. She looked like a little black bunny bounding through the powder. I do have jackets for my dogs but I don't put them on unless it's really cold like 30 degrees or less.
