Sammi just got spayed :(

She's resting now in her bed.. but she won't stop wimpering and crying...
it's breaking my heart... I'm right next to her and it makes me that there's nothing I can do to make her feel better... She keeps
scratching at her e-collar too...

Does anyone know what I can do to make her feel better? They gave us metacam (pain killers) to make her feel better but we can't give it to her unless she eats (and the vet suggested that i feed her at 6 so i have to wait...)

should i just let her ride it out and cry?

I don't know where you are but here it is six o-clock. The reason they want you to give it to her with food is because on it's own it can cause stomach upset and vomiting could disrupt the closure of the wound. She is obviously in pain. If you were in pain would you take something? The same criteria should be used for your dog.

I would suggest getting some really yummy treat (meat, hotdog, cheese) and get here a few onces of that with the pain pill tucked inside. Then at 6 offer her the normal meal. If you wait until her normal meal she may not eat it anyway if she is in pain. Better to offer something really yumy to make sure she eats plus it is easier to give meds that way too.

When it comes to pill time, I'll try anything that they find SCRUMPTIOUS. Anything they can't pass up. I don't give a hoot what it is (for the most part, anyways). Sorry your little one is hurting. She'll get better soon!

Awww...I'm sorry that Sammie is hurting. I hope she is feeling better right now. I'm totally agreeing with everyone about giving Sammie something REALLY yummy to get her enough food to take her pill. Mocha scratched at his e-collar a lot too and kept bumping into things which in turn made him jump back alot. I would say that you should watch Sammie really closely and you can even take the e-collar off her and really observe her and see if she pulls at her stitches. Mocha was really not licking his stitches like they said he did at the vet's office. He had been shaved and I think it just really itched and he was licking his belly to relieve the itching. I took the e-collar off him about the second day after he got home.

I'm assuming that Sammie came right home from being spayed? If so, she probably will feel better by tomorrow. Mocha spent the night at the vet's and by the time I picked him up the next day after work, he was running around and acting very normal by then. I expect that Sammie will be feeling much better tomorrow.

Also...I think maybe females do a little differently? I remember others on this board talking about their females being spayed and having more pain or looking like it.

Keep us updated!

Yeah Sammi came home after being spayed... and she's feeling much better this morning! Her tail is finally wagging like it used to, and she isn't crying anymore... She wimpers here and there trying to take the collar off... but it's not that bad...

She doesn't seem to be in pain... she just wants the ecollar off -
we finally fed her some scrambled eggs and gave her the metacam...

She's so cute she walks around with her head down so that
the lamp shade/cone completely covers the floor... i can't help but to laugh at her... she also bumps into things...

poor thing... she has the saddest eyes right now...

A-w-w-w....I'm glad she's feeling better. You could try taking off the E-collar and see if she will not mess with the sutures too much. I never used those things and the dogs would lick a little bit, but not too much. What does your vet say? That she has to wear that?

Anyhow, it won't be long till she's just like new. Good luck.

Awwwww....Sammi is the cutiest!!!!!! Sweet baby. Yeah, I would try to take the e-collar off her and see if she will keep away from the stitches. The vet wanted me to keep the e-collar on Mocha for 2 weeks and keep him penned up and crated to prevent him from jumping for 2 weeks...but my boy was fine as a swine in mud and was doing just dandy when he got home and I just watched him closely and he has been doing just fine.

i want to take the ecollar off of her but i'm scared she might mess with the sutures... loves licking herself (even before any of this) and i'm sure she'll lick
herself there too... the vet said to make sure it stays dry and i'm scared her licking it might be bad... i don't know she seems a little depressed... my heart is in conflict...i wanna take it off and make her feel better but i don't want to endanger her well being either...

Awww she's so sweet and really giving you those " oh mommy " look.
This is just an idea but could you take the collar off when you are there to supervise her and put it back on, like at night, when you can't see what she is doing? At least that way she would get a break from it, I did that when my boy got fixed.

leave the ecollar on her..... the fact is that she just had a hysterectomy.... ya know when people have hysterectomy we are out of commission for about six weeks. This is a major surgery she just had...... also if she messes with those sutures you could have a real problem on your hands. I know a person who had her dog spayed.... this was a very very dog savvy person and the dog got the ecollar off and pulled the sutures out and when the woman woke up in the morning she found her dog with its intestines hanging out.....

leave the e collar on..... she might be uncomfortable but at least she won't do any damage to herself while you are asleep.

Shalva is right on those sutures. It doesn't happen often but it can happen and there isn't anything worse than having everything fall right back out, the risk of infection at that point goes up ten fold!

A friend of mine had a bully do that after a c-section. What a nightmare that was, infection set in and she almost lost her.

yeah i think i'll just keep it on... it seems like she's getting used to it... and it's better for her to be uncomfortable and safe rather than being in danger...thanks for the advice guys - greatly appreciated...

how long does it take for the sutures to heal? they told me not to let her jump, run, or do anything else but she seems so bored... haha...

here are some pictures to entertain u guys!

i told sammi she was going to be spayed... she curls her lip in disgust!
