Just curious
Hi every one! Ok so Charlie is nine months old now and still as cute as ever but he is still going for a wee like a girl lol I was just curious to know at what age about will he start peeing like a boy (cocking his leg) i mean is it a matter for the indiviual pup to decide? Having a bitch before him for 17 1/2 years i am a little out of practice with the way the boys behave lol
thanks Sharon and Charlie ![]() |

It really is up to the individual dog. Some prefer not to lift their leg, my big boy Drew for instance only hikes his when another male is near his gaggle of girls. lol

My boys do both ways. One of my GSDs peed like a girl forever and most all the time without lifting his leg.

I was told they learn to cock their leg by example. If he sees another male dog do it often he may learn it.
My Kino was never around a male dog while urinating, so he never learned it. I doubt he ever will. So it seems my Bud will never learn it either as Kino doesnt do it. Urinating like a female dog isnt nesicarily a bad thing. He has much less of a chance of peeing on himself... |

I wish Winston would transition to leg-lifting. He gets pee all over his front legs lately. *sigh*

I agree with the replies -- I think it just depends on the dog. I've wondered the same about my MaltiPoo but thought maybe he'll do it when he's older (hes 3 months old) but then I pretty much stopped wondering about it, thinking as long as he's healthy, then how he pees would be the least of my concerns.
What he does is stretch his back legs a little bit (so he's slanting forward) and thats how he pees. It can be tricky sometimes b/c from certain angles its hard to tell that he's peeing so its too late for me to take him outside but I dont think its anything to worry about. ![]() |

There are some funny responses here. Makes me feel better, since our male dog was weird about this behavior too.
Chili has always been much more feminine than our girl Pepper. We think it's funny- he smells flowers, doesn't chase animals, loves to be dressed up, loves grooming, etc. Of course, Chili never lifted his leg when going. Then, a year ago my parents took in a stray male GSD that tried to be, um, very friendly to Chili. Chili suddenly decided to start lifting his leg, like "See? I am a guy. So back off!" Now he does it all the time. It's not like he hadn't seen other male dogs do this previously, I think he just hadn't felt his masculinity threatened before! Dogs are just as individual as people, and goodness knows, we all have our little idiosyncracies right? |
