Yelping to encourage bite inhabition

Okay, so I've read all over here that yelping when your puppy bites you is good for them to know that they're being too rough. Does this actually work? I ask because it literally freaks gizmo out when I do it.

He'll be happily muching away on his toy, then will come out of nowhere and chomp on my foot. It hurts! So I yelped and he cocked his head and looked at me, backed up, started barking like crazy and bolted when I went to pet him a few mins later.

Maybe my "yelp" is off?

I'm just curious as to the other reactions that dogs have given when you've yelped at them.... or other tips for bite inhabition. I try to give him his chew toy when he does chomp, but he looks at me and goes "But WHY? your hand is so much tastier!!!!" Rome wasn't built in a day, so I know it's going to take time, just would like some pointers.

It made him stop biting you. Sounds like you've got a *very* effective yelp! Offering him a suitable chew instead of you and then praising him is is the right way to go. Yes, it does take time for hi nto learn.

Yelping isn't effective for some dogs. It excites them and makes them bite even harder.

Some other things you can do to practice bite inhibition:
Play tug or fetch. If a dog tooth touches your skin, yelp. Game over. Repeat.
Feed your dog by hand. If a dog tooth touches your skin, yelp. No food. Repeat.
You get the idea.
