a new puppy at home
hey guyz, i just bought a new puppy, a ruby coloured cavelier king abt 3 mths old. shes absolutely marvellous. so cute and small...
i also have a pembroke welsh corgi of 1 year old in my house. just started introducing to each other and they seem fine. Questions: 1) the new puppy always like to nip and bite because of her teething age but she also does that to my pembroke. my corgi will run away and they will sort of like play ''catch''. how do i differentiate between playing and fighting? 2) have constricted her to her playpen and in it, is a small bed and a potty tray wif newspaper on the top. Have also bought puppy trainer where u put drops of liquid on the newspaper to tempt her to pee and poo on the newspaper. Is this an acceptable way to train her? 3) Lastly, whenever we go to sleep, she will cry and cry and it is so heart'breaking. soi always go to her place, carry her and then make her sleep. after about 3 hrs, she starts crying again. its really sad hearing her cry. what should i do? thanx alot guyz |

Congrats on your new baby. I'm not nearly the expert some of the other members are but I have some experience with your third problem. I know it's heartbreaking to hear her cry but you are actually encouraging her to do it. She wants to be with you and when she cries you come to her. Crying is working for her - it gets her what she wants. You really need to let her cry. She'll soon learn that sleep time is just that. I don't know where you have her bed but it might make it easier on both of you if you move her into your room at night. If she can see and hear you it may be all the comfort she needs.

Search around on this forum. I'm sure you'll find many posts relating to these same problems. You can also read the stickies in the puppy forum. There's something on crate training, which is what I highly recommend. If you want your pup to learn to go outside, I wouldn't use newspapers. If you're telling her it's OK to go inside, it's harder for her to learn to go outside.
The biting and nipping is talked about many many places here. See what you can find and if you still can't find anything or need more help, don't hesitate to post again. We'll put our heads together. |

Hello and welcome jumblejack. 1) you'll be able to tell play from fighting if it happens. Sounds like they are just enjoying each other. Your older dog will put the youngr one in it's place if she gets too rough. 2) I would not train her to go potty inside the house unless that is where you will actually want her to go. Some people with small dogs use a doggy potty pan and litter, is tht what you are trying to do? If not, take her out after play, naptime, feeding, and every hour inbetween! LOL 3)Puppies cry because they want to be with their pack. in this case her pack is you. Have you tried moving the playpen to the side of your bed? For twenty years I have always put my dogs on the side of the bed for the night. When they would wake up and cry I would just stick my fingers in their crate and hum. they realized they were not alone and soon settled down. If they wouldn't settle, that was my cue that they had to potty and out we went. It has worked for me for every dog.
Good luck and have fun with your new baby ! |
