butt dragging
My dog has been 'butt-dragging' for the past few days now. Nothing extreme. Its not like he does it ALL the time, but enough times that I've noticed. I just took him to the vet 2 weeks ago and he said his stool sample showed no worms. Since he hasnt had all his vaccinations yet, he's not exposed to grass or other dogs so Im pretty sure its definitely not worms.
Does anyone know why dogs do that? should I be concerned? |

She may have impacted anal glands. It's common in little dogs. You can either get your vet or groomer to check and see if they are full and they can empty it. They can also show you how to do it.
Another thing too is, has he been groomed lately? Sometimes after being groomed some dogs get irritated around their anus after being shaved. This will cause a dog to scoot his bum. |

I thought about the impacted anal glands, but the vet just did that last month. I cant imagine it having to be done again but I'll ask him anyway.
He hasnt been groomed but i HAVE just used clippers in his butt area so it doesnt get too dirty... thats a good point. I hope thats all it is. Thanks!! |

I'd have him retested for worms if it doesn't stop soon, just because the test was negative at that time doesn't mean they didn't miss it or he doesn't now have them. Could very well be a grooming issue too though.

Some dogs need their glands expressed often.. and it seems like once you do it, they seem to need it more often after that for some reason. May be that, may not be that. I know with my pugs, if they happen to scoot (thankfully they never do), I'd check their glands.

As far as i understand (just as a puppy owner, Im obviously not a vet
) I think its when their anal sacs are 'full'... now why they bum scoot I dont know. I dont know if it makes them feel better or what... Hes going to the vet on Monday for his second set of shots (yay!) so I will mention it to the vet. ![]() |
