Winston's adventures in vet visiting...

Hi, all!

So Winston has had as busy a couple of weeks as my husband and I have. Last week we thought he had worms, but lab tests ruled it out.

Then at his Sunday obedience class, we saw him eat a seed pod that fell off a tree (it was basically a nut). He was totally normal Sunday and Monday, and Tuesday morning threw up clear liquid. He continued to eat/drink/pee/poop normally, so we just stayed on watch. Wednesday morning, multiple clear fluid toss-ups. Same normal other functions, though. And yesterday, he threw up a couple of times, and then later in the day, vomited all of his food AND the stupid seed. It had been in his stomach since SUNDAY.

Just when we thought we were in the clear, he started yelping randomly last night, as if he was in pain. He was quiet for a while, then yelped again, and we took him to the emergency vet... got X-rayed, found no evidence that he was stung by a bee (this was a worry because we found a bee in one piece and then he messed with it and it was in two pieces by the time we got it away from him)... So they gave him a shot of painkillers and we came home at 2 am.

Today I'm working from home to be with him, because the painkillers make him lose bladder control and he's a mess. Now he's whining about something, and he seems like he's still "coming down", and I thought I'd come here and throw myself a pity party, LOL.

UGH! Puppies... my poor little man. And the moment he feels better, he's going straight into the tub!

Oh, tea and sympathy to you. I wish our pups could just tell us where it hurts. It would be so much easier. I hope Winston feels better soon. Did the er vet have any idea what might be wrong?

Thanks. She thought it might be a crick in his neck or something, but he showed pretty normal range of movement. So it's a mystery to us... but he hasn't reacted that way since last night (of course, he's still a little floaty), and didn't have a reaction during the exam.

Ahh! poor you and poor little Winston. It's tough growing up and having to suffer the consequences of eating whatever looks good.
I sure hope that seed didn't irritate his stomach too much while it was down there.... he might have tummy cramps because of the silly thing.I know it's come up but it could have just irritated his tummy enough. Might not be a bad idea to put him on a light diet till things settle down. Good luck!

Poor Winston. Have you taken him to your regular vet about the pain? I'm sorry, but if a vet told me my dog was yelping in pain and needed pain killers strong enough to make her lose bladder control all because of a crick in her neck, I'd be tempted to slap the vet up the side of the head. What indication was there that the dog would have a crick in his neck for heaven's sake?! Yes, it really is too bad that they can't tell us where or when or how bad it hurts. I always feel so helpless. Please let us know how he's doing.

Well, there was no indication of that, or of anything. The X-rays were clear. I think, like Shadowkins suggests, that it might be something residual from having an enormous seed bumping around his tummy all week.

He hasn't indicated pain at all today. He's a little spooky from the residual effects of the pain meds, but he's moving around all right and eating (and drinking the water I mix in with his food).

I'll update if anything comes up.

Well, Winston is fully recovered as of yesterday; nice and clean, happy, active. We were driving someplace, and he was panting, and I saw a bee stinger in his tongue! So I guess it was the bee. We stopped at a vet's office and they removed it for us. And he's no worse for the wear, but now we have to add Benadryl to our first aid kits.

Oh whew! I'm so glad he's better. So, that was it! A bee sting. No wonder he got all discombobulated. Pain killers. Benedryl should have been sufficient. Oh well, too bad the vet didn't look closer the first time and discover that stinger. You were more observant than the vet. Anyhow...I'm so glad everything turned out OK.
