Puppy with bloody diarrhoea
We've just purchased a ten week old Cocker Spaniel Pup, she was the runt of the litter. This is her third day with us and this morning she had diarrhoea with a fair amount of bright red blood in, jelly-like in consistance (sorry for being so graphic)... she's booked in for her jabs tomorrow so will mention it to the vet however, if anyone has any ideas before then they would be appreciated! ??

Don't wait! Get her to the vet ASAP, and keep her away from other dogs. Parvo (which it sounds like) is extremely serious!

I second the above urgencies! DO NOT TAKE any chances. This does sound like Parvo which is VERY deadly, PLEASE do not wait to take this little one tot he vets...please.

Where did you buy the pup? If she has Parvo then whoever you got her from should pay for treatment. If they wont, then take them to small claims court. I sure hope she doesn't have Parvo. It's a horrible nasty disease. I lost a pup to Parvo back in 1984. I'll never forget the horrible smell as long as I live. Be sure to start cleaning all areas where she has been with bleach water solution, as it's extremely contagious, even to other dogs who have had their Parvo shot. My other dog got a dose of Parvo and she had already had two Parvo shots. Bad, bad stuff!

Oh geez! I agree with the others and Calgal is so right about all that. Do hurry and get him to the vet. I hope it's not Parvo, but it sure could be. Sending my thoughts and prayers that he's OK. Let us know.

Take Responsibility

Not to mention that if your pup does in fact have Parvo then the other pups in her litter are also likely to be infected and the person whom you bought your pup from needs to be told.
Any reputable breeder would WANT to know and take FULL responsibility for the ailment and the treatment. |

I agree with everyone else, run don't walk to your vet as every hour counts when dealing with a potential case of parvo.
Your pup may just have irritated bowels at the moment but one can never be too careful. |

Due in December!

Well, Gizmo had the exact same thing when I brought him home, although his started the next day. The same thing, incredibly soft stools and the jelly-like substance in it. He was the runt of his litter as well.
It turns out that he had Giardia, a fecal sample will figure out what it is for sure though. From what my vet personally told me, that if your pup is lethargic, hiding in a corner, refusing food and water and over-all listless it's a good chance your pup might have parvo. He also mentioned that stress from leaving his brothers and sisters can wreak havoc on the system, as well as any change in food. Are you still feeding the puppy on the same schedual that the breeder did? Same food? Gizmo wasn't any of those, just had the bloody diharrea. I wouldn't wait to get your puppy to a vet though, early detection in anything is vital. |

Tinkerbelle had bloody diareah and she turned out to have parvo-although her first symptoms were just being lazy and no appetite then she started eating lots of grass.. then throwing up liquid--then came the bloody poop. She almost didnt make it-please take your dog to the vet and dont wait either. Keep us updated!

Go to your vet now or go to an emergency clinic if your vet is closed. It could be Parvo or Giardia. Parvo is very deadly and every hour counts for your puppy to start treatment. Giardia is a parasite in the intestines and is pretty common in puppies and can still be very dangerous if not treated quickly. Antibiotics will take care of this and will clear the symptoms up fast. Any loose stools if left long enough can cause dehydration very quickly in young puppies so run to the vet right now!
