Unhappy Frustrated with training Tazer to go on Leash

HI, I am at My wits end, I know that I started Tazer a bit late he was 6 months when I started and he has made no leway yet. I have tried treats, I have tried him outside, inside but he won't move. I got a harness awhile ago, nope nothing......now i am beginning to think that i am a bad mother..........please if you have any suggestions I would be forever grateful!

I don't know how good they are, but my aunt mentioned that there are certain types of harnesses that don't allow the dog to pull. It's not the sense of a choke-chain, where you choke the dog into walking or not pulling, but it's got some sort of elastic that when the dog pulls, it pulls him right back to being beside you. Kinda does the work for you, in a way. It'll happen every time he pulls, so the basic jist is that once you use it for abit, he won't pull.

I think they're called "anti-pull" harnesses, but not quite sure. Has anyone used these? I don't know if that's the problem you're having. Maybe explain more what Tazer is doing?

Does he come along with you when you don't have a leash on him? Like if you're trotting through the house or out in your yard, making fun and games, exciting sounds, patting your thigh? If so, practice that for a while. Make coming along with you or following you so rewarding and fun for puppy. Do that for a week. Then attach the leash and do the same thing but just let him drag the leash. Don't pick up the other end. Get some good treats; tiny hot dog pieces, cheese, real meat. Get a toy and toss it out ahead of him. Make it a game, lots of praise when he follows along with you.

Then pick up the leash and do the same thing. Do not allow tension in the leash or drag the dog. Encourage, entice, reward. Keep doing that and he should become use to it.

Then you can attach a command like "let's go." Reward for his coming along somewhere close to you. Don't reward if he lags too far behind. Make some slow turns. Do this for very short periods, like 2 or 3 minutes at a time. Then work on something else, like sit or down or stay. Short periods.

If you do these things when the dog's tummy isn't full from a meal, he'll be more interested in treats.

Just keep at it and make it fun, not a drugery. Good luck.

Carrie is right (again)!! Attach his leash and let him drag it around the house and yard. Leave it on all day and let him get used to it. He won't stay still for the whole day.

Don't leave him unsupervised with the leash on, of course.
