The day my dog Ruby died.......was it revenge?

Ruby was old but never sick a day in her life. All of a sudden she got very weak, really bad breath and had lyme disease and failing kideys.

I was the guy who had to hold her down to cut her toenails and hold her down for baths and strip all that shedded hair.

Ruby hated me.

We took her to the Vet and the Doc gave her a few pills and her bad breath went away....HOORAY

but her health was deteriorating rapidly

One night my wife called me in a very sad mood. You have to get home and put her to sleep" She was crying(Ruby represented 14 years of our life and our 3 kids life also.)

I am a trucker and just turned around and headed home .

I called the vet and made arrangements for 8 am

Now I am sitting with Ruby and she is breathing very shallow.

I start to think about putting her out of her misery myself but cant come up with a method or the guts to do such a thing.

Instead I sit in a rocking chair and put Ruby on my chest with her chin under mine and wait til 8 am.

I start to play with her snoot like I always did and surprisingly she was her old self nibbling and mouthing my hand.

All of a sudden without warning she bit down so hard on my hand that it went right to my elbow.

I could not open her jaws!!!

They were locked and I was in excruciating pain!!

I finally opned her jaws and put her on a blanket where she passed away almost instantly.

She finally got me back.

Ruby

It's not uncommon for a dog to have a seizure or a bit of a convulsion before dying... that's what it sounds like. Not revenge.

Yes she was a good dog. I was told later about the spasm like reflex but was also told how lucky I was because he snoot was resting under my chin and she could have bitten me in the face or even my neck!

My condolences. It's very sweet of you to add that bit of humor to her story (that's how I saw it anyway... waiting for her final moment to say "Take THAT for all those times you forced me to endure torturous nail clippings and baths!"). I bet she had some personality.
Rest in peace, Ruby.

I'm so very sorry for you and your wife. She's now at Rainbow bridge and will be there to greet you when it's your turn. Maybe when she bit down it was her way of trying to hold on to this world. However, I'm sure Rottnpagan is right.

we have been adopting dogs and giving them good lives for years. We did get 2 of the Carolinas from breeders but my wife is still combing petfinder to adopt.
As the dad I've taken that final trip to the vet a number of times. The worst part is that its not only your dog but its a measuring stick of your own life also. He was there for birthdays, Christmas etc.But we and I mean dog lovers also know that there is a dog somewhere that needs to be rescued. So thats what we do.Move on and give another a good home.

Although we eventually lose our animals the joy they bring over their lifetime truly enriches our lives.
I admire people who rescue and love their adopted pets.
I am sorry for Ruby but also happy for her that she died in your arms rather than in a cold vet surgery.

This is what Doris Day said: "I want people to know they're not replacing the one they lost. They're giving another wonderful little soul a home".
