Teeth Cleaning in 9 yr old Shih Tzu
Took my recently adopted Shih Tzu to the Vet and she is in good health and I asked about teeth cleaning. They thought she should have them professionally cleaned and it took my breath away when they told me it would be between $400 and $800. I am brushing her teeth everyother day and purchased a liquid that softens the tartar that she has on her teeth. Do you think what I am doing will do much to preserve her teeth.

First off I'd get a couple more opinons. That's sounds awfully expensive. My Delsi who is 14 years old had her teeth cleaned about 3 months ago and it was only a little under $200.00. Keep brushing her teeth every night and dip a Q-tip in either a mint Listerine or Crest and rub all over the gums. If her teeth have a lot of tarter or her breath gets terribly stinky, then she will need to have them cleaned. Find some clinics that will work with you on a payment plan. Ask your local shelter to recommend a Vet. that would do this and isn't so expensive. Good luck.

I recently paid 700 to have my Chloe's teeth cleaned but she had problems so needed special care.
If her teeth arnt that bad i would give her some raw chicken bones to see if that cleans them and sweetens her breath. Also use a dog toothpaste and a small childs soft brush and make sure you get behind the teeth. Good luck ![]() |

Bklevar,
Are you in the US (I'm not sure about pricing in other countries)? Just guessing here, but if you're in the US, it sounds like maybe it's not an established Vet with his/her own practice. They do tend to have more normal prices. Only downside is, the waitlist time may be longer, but it's certainly worth it in the longrun if you can find one. |
