Glucosamine and quality
This article suggests that some of the top brands of pet medicines with Glucosamine in, actually contain very little, and sometimes none.
One reason for this is because pet medicines are not as strictly checked as human ones and so the quality control is worse. Does anyone know any more about this? Would it be better to buy human quality Glucosamine for my old dog? |

I currently use Syn Flex and have noticed a HUGE improvement in my (almost) nine year old ESS.
He was grunting and looking uncomfortable when jumping or getting up from laying down. This weekend he showed NONE of those signs and this is his third month on the supplement. I've heard what you read too, which is why I stayed from the more used brands, specifically those that come in a pill form. |

A gal I know who has a doctors degree and owns a couple of Vitamin Herb stores said human grade glucosamine is much better for dogs than the dog ones. I just tried calling her to find out again what she had said about the reason, but she left already. I'll call her tomorow.

There is crappy quality glucosamine (and any other supplement) sold for human use too. Supplements aren't regulated or teste dthe way drugs are so there can be a huge range in quality. I do believe you get what you pay for for the most part.
Some of the things I know to look for are Glucosamine HCL rather than Glucosamine sulphate. G. Sulphate is far less bioavailable to the dogs. I tend to go with companies I know I can trust and like to get supplements that supply the ingredient from a natural rather than synthetic source. I am currently using Glyco flex which is made for vetrinary use by the well known pharmaceutical company Abbott- they make human drugs too. Glyco flex is made from perna mussles or green lipped mussels which are a good source of glucosamine. |

We use glyco flex for Dutchess too - and have seen a great improvement. You have tp be carefull with all supplements, like said previously, even human grade are not tested and regulated.
