What sporting dog is this?.
Hi
Some farmer near where I live has springer spaniels (so he says). I brought a springer spaniel from him. He bread them because his female was getting old and wanted another springer. The male dog belonged to his grandfather and that dog was a hunting dog. Anyway, as time went on, I have noticed the dog does not look like a springer and to be honest, I am not worried what it is as she's a lovely dog and I could not ask for more. What gets me is, I just do not know what "model" dog she is?. Thats what is playing on my mind. Did the guy get one over on me I wonder?. She is now 4 months old. You guys maybe able to tell me what she is. So far people have said 100% Springer German Shorthaired Pointer Springer cross jack russell. Thanks James Images are here http://80.229.232.192/rosie/ |

Well I dont think she is a purebred and she doesnt look much like a Springer Spaniel- she looks more like a smooth collie cross maybe. Here are both springer types :
Here is the Welsh Springer Spaniel- ![]() And here is the English Springer Spaniel- ![]() The person you got her from did pull some thing over you or he didnt know what the Springer was and just said his dogs were(never know, some people are very under educated on dog breeds), or his female had a one night stand with a smooth collie some where..but I'm sure all the puppies would of had some similariies of a springer so my guess is that he lied and his female and male are not springers and are in fact springer mix. Welcome to GP |

definitely no smooth collie in there that I can see....
and the pup in the picture is young.... I know that field bred dogs don't get the feathering... so that makes sense.... like I said I will trust novel on this one. s |

Found a picture that I think will help. This is a field bred English Springer Spaniel. Notice that there is very little feathering.
From: http://www.fieldbredspringer.com/whitewater.htm Depending on the line, you may have even less feathering. This pup from the OP is very young, and without knowing lineage, you may still have some outcrosses in there from other breeds, but, for the most part it just looks like a Springer. Edited to add: The pictures took terribly long for me to load, since I'm on dial-up, so, I looked only at the stand and hold ones. |

She sure is... How much energy does she have?? Springers are known for their endless energy. I had a lab springer mix once... my my. His name was aptly Sparky. That dog never stopped!
We'd love more pictures. A great place to host pictures is photobucket. Then you can share even more with us! |

Here are two examples of the Springer Spaniel.
You can tell which one is the show and which one is the field spaniel. Field Spaniels have much shorter ears, but they do have feathering, there can be just a slight bit on the ears/undercarriage/tail and backs of legs. Feather may be in some areas but not others. Every dog is an individual. Springers have wavy/curly hair not straight. Show Springer Spaniel Field Springer Spaniel Here is a URL to a picture which is an example of possible feathering areas on a Springer. The following site should be of use as they are an association and show both field trial and show trial. /www.englishspringer.org |

I thought so too Calgal. Calibra's dog looks like a springer. I suppose she could be some mix of sporting dog types, because they do tend to look somewhat similar in conformation, but, if the guy says she was a Springer, I highly douby he'd give them a GSP. Then he'd sell it as a GSP. Again, I'm not guaranteeing that it's a purebred dog, but it looks like a field bred Springer Spaniel.

Does her hair grow, and do you have to keep her trimmed?? I've had 2 springers - show/field and the one we have now is very fieldy. So I thought she wouldn't have to be groomed so much, but she has lots of feathering on her legs and under-belly area and the groomer took off alot of hair the last time she was in! She still needs to be trimmed every 8 weeks. I've never seen a springer with short ears like that where the hair doesn't grow long.
