Novel - weim info please.
A friend of mine is considering a weimeraner as her next dog. She asked me the other day about weims with white markings on the chest. She likes the white markings and wants to know if they are desirable within the breed or if she should steer towards breeders who DONT breed dogs with white markings or if it doesnt matter either way.
Thanks Bell |

White is a very serious fault ( other than a spot on the chest ) and not what I'd be looking for. A small white marking on the chest is all that is permitted unless the white spot is due to an injury of some kind.

OK so small white markings on the chest are permitted (thats all she was talking about) Really want to know if they are DESIRABLE or not though. My friend would like to show her dog a little as in several years time when she is more clued up on the breed she would like to become a shower/breeder and possibly even a judge. At this stage she is just after a family pet with the potential to not be laughed out of the show ring to familiarise herself with the processes. She has two small toddlers so wont be doing anything serious for a while.

Well, a small white mark on the chest isn't supposed to be looked at harshly by a judge but since I don't show this particular breed I can't tell you whether it's actually something thats done or not.
I doubt it would be a desirable trait since coloration is pretty defined for this breed but I'm sure Novel can answer this a thousand times better than I. I'm sure it will catch her eye and she'll answer soon but in case she misses it you could always send her a PM. ![]() |

Hi Bellfounder... Thank you for the PM.
The AKC Weim standard states: A small white marking on the chest is permitted, but should be penalized on any other portion of the body. White spots resulting from injury should not be penalized. http://www.weimclubamerica.org/weima.../standard.html I would say it is not desirable, and most breeders for the show ring will try and keep it out of their lines. However it is much more common in field lines, where the emphasis is not as much on appearance. I have seen Bench and Field Champions with small white spots on their chests. Your friend would never be laughed out of the ring for it, and comes down to a personal preference in the end. If the puppy/dog is remarkable in other ways, a white spot should not prevent you from buying him/her. Often puppies will have a white spot on their chest that disappears with age. Tell your friend Good Luck with her search! If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask, and point her towards the Weim Club website, as it has some good quizzes and information, as well as a referral list. http://www.weimclubamerica.org |

When I was growing up, my favorite Weim, Heather had a star on her chest. She was such a loving dog, and we had her forever it seems. She passed away when I was 9, from torsion.
Unfortunately it happens.Anywho, her star was probably about an inch and a half across, and had points that kind of went with the lay of her fur, so pointing up and down. She had her CD, if I remember correctly, but her conformation, not her star, kept her from the show ring. She also was a fine hunter, would hunt all day long, no matter what... |
