Is this a Field Spaniel or English SS field-bred?
![]() She has HUGE feet, weighs about 38 lbs. Her personality is so different from our first show/field springer, and we're trying to figure out why she is so different (in a good way). Her tail wags horizontally and the black ticking nearly covers her nose and the white that goes up her nose & forehead (there must be a term for that, but I don't know what it is!!) When we got her from the rescue they said that she had such big feet because she was so malnourished that she was supposed to be a larger dog. They also said she may never run, but that is a joke, because she is well-muscled and moves like a streak (especially after ducks!!). She is comical and smart (but aren't all of our babies???) And what is the difference between field spaniel and ESS field-bred? And is there a difference between the UK and the USA?? (I hope it's okay to post the picture, and that it isn't too big!) Thanks! PS: we're dog-sitting this weekend and have a 55lb field springer - purebred, male, and Cassy looks nothing like this dog. Her feet are bigger than his!! |

I agree.
I don't see Field Spaniel at all. I actually thought more Welsh Springer than anything at first. But they are red/white...LOL. So my next guess would be ESS. ![]() |

There is a HUGE difference between ESS in the USA and any other country. Ours are smaller, lighter boned and most show/bench breeders avoid any ticking on their dogs, and breed for a specific coat pattern. ESS in other countries are larger, more substantial dogs with generous ticking, and have much more white markings than American ESS. So far, ESS have been the only breed I've owned. I've had dogs from both bench/show lines and field-bred. My 3 were all beloved pets I would say she is an American field-bred ESS.Attached is a small picture of a Field Spaniel which seems to be a public domain photo. I have a couple Field Spaniel photos I've taken at local dog shows, but they're not scanned. ~*~*And he says 'Rhiannon don't go.... Rhiannon stay'.... And he still cries out for her.... 'Don't leave me.... don't leave me now'....*~*~ |

I just want to echo what EnchantedGypsy said...ESS & FS are completely different breeds.
She definatley looks like an ESS to me. She's gorgeous by the way. Cass. |

She's definitely not a Field Spaniel totally wrong colour and shape really.
I'd say ESS, though what are your views on maybe a working cocker? |

Look at this site, ignore the brushing of the feathers but it does look like the above dog is a Cocker.

Thanks for all the help! I'd love to know Cassy's background (besides the part of her being rescued from a rabbit cage in Utah with so much "doodoo" hooked to her they couldn't tell if she was a male or female). God bless the neighbor who reported the abuse. She is awesome! There's nothing else to describe her!
I did have contact with a person from the UK who had me measure Cassy(!!) and she is too big to be a field spaniel. The English Cocker really looks similar! I need to go back and check out that website for the height, weight, etc. In the meantime, I think that the 55 lb springer we were dogsitting may just have a bit of Brittany in him!! |

I know this is a bit old, but I'd like to say that if she's too big for a field spaniel, she definately isnt an english cocker. She looks like a purebred ESS to me. If anything she has both field and show type lines. To me she actually looks like the type of springers you'd see in the UK. ^_^ Beautiful little girl though, she looks like she'd be awesome to watch in the field just running and chasing up birds ^_^

She's beautiful!! I would definately say she's ESS. She looks to big to be from the states!! I have an American Cocker Spaniel, she's only 17 lbs. I'll post more pics of here when she gets off of Mama duty.

You know, at first, her backend was so underdeveloped from lack of exercise in the first part of her puppyhood, that her face looked big to me. Now, we've had her for over a year, and the body has caught up with the face!! She has filled out - maybe gained about 5 lbs (I hope it's not more!!) and she looks like a regular ESS. My latest picture. She is a wonderful dog!
